We had a great response to our last callout for Elm volunteers to work on our Trans Dimension site, which builds on the PlaceCal API. We'd now love some more people to help out with the tech that makes it all possible. Thanks!!

At a time when people are looking to move off Meta products, we think that just knowing what groups there are and what they are doing is a really needed and key piece of infrastructure that should be a publicly owned commons -- wikipedia for community activity. If in the process it removes half the reason people are on Facebook, even better.
We think we can be this info hub but need your help to make it happen <3

We are actively looking for #ruby on #rails volunteers to help with our PlaceCal initiative!
PlaceCal is a radical approach to community tech that helps existing community organisers support their community to publish events using any open format they like (iCal / json / APIs...)
PlaceCal then aggregates and republishes it based on any community of place and interest.
We would love more help! Drop us a DM or pop on our discord (discord.gfsc.studio)
Boosts welcome!

Lack of good accessibility statements makes community action hard to coordinate, as in most cases venue accessibility is in the hands of mega-landlords like Bruntwood and not individual promoters.

Social media reactions to our recent report showed a lack of understanding around what accessibility statements are for and what they should contain. In our view they shouldn’t be a set of warnings about things venues don’t have, but rather a clear invitation to join in!

We welcome financial donations to continue the work we do at GFSC on projects like the Trans Organisers Fund https://ko-fi.com/gfscstudio. We also welcome conversations with any funders who want to help us continue this work, as our source of funding for this work no longer exists and we cannot find another suitable source of funds.

There’s a lot in there but the single clearest theme we heard from almost everyone about was event and venue accessibility. Greater Manchester now has almost no trans-friendly, accessible and affordable spaces, with the few there are in constant threat of closure or gentrification. We think much more could be done by landlords and the wider VCSE sector to provide this much-needed space to some of the most marginalised.

The fund’s goal was to work to support organisers to work out how we can do this work sustainably in ways that value people’s time and result in long lasting community infrastructure and care networks.

The goal of the fund was to facilitate trans healing and justice work in Greater Manchester. We feel that being a trans organiser is currently extremely stressful, underfunded and high stakes at the best of times, with almost no material support out there for the people doing the work on the ground to ensure a better future for trans people.

We’ve just published out report of what we did, what we spent it on, and what we think grassroots groups, funders and landlords could do to make the world a more just place for trans and disabled people. You can read it here, and we’ll be sharing some more thoughts in the weeks to come.

The Trans Organisers Fund was a one-off pilot fund for #trans organisers in Greater #Manchester. The fund was administered by Geeks for Social Change and financially backed by Lankelly Chase, with a steering group consisting of Greater Manchester-based trans organisers.
