Matt Stoller, who writes on monopoly power, has taken the time to actually READ the TikTok divestment law. In his Jan. 19 newsletter he provides crucial context and goes over the facts. I found this piece much more valuable than the hundreds of uninformed hot takes that I've seen over the past few days.
"Monopoly Round-Up: Explaining the TikTok Dispute"
"The law never called for TikTok to be banned, it called for a divestment. So what's happening now?"

News seen today: The New York Times has blocked a pro-Palestine ad from AFSC, a Quaker organization.
https://www.commondreams.org/news/nyt-afsc-advertisment-genocide
The American Friends Service Committee... announced Wednesday that it has cancelled planned advertising with The New York Times after the outlet rejected one of the group's proposed ads that read: "Tell Congress to stop arming Israel's genocide in Gaza now! ...Tell the President and Congress to stop the killing and starvation in Gaza."

Seen today: Democracy Fund, a mid-sized progressive foundation, today called attention in an update email to its "Declaration of Independence from Bipartisanship", released a full 4 years ago.
They came to the realization that attempting to be "bipartisan" in the current U.S. political climate requires sacrificing core moral principles, and they were thankfully unwilling to do that.

From the article: "Whistleblower Chelsea Manning and Raquel Willis, co-founder of the group behind the protest, the Gender Liberation Movement (GLM), were among those detained. The group was made up of people of all gender identities, including transgender and cisgender women alike, who displayed a pink banner in front of the women's bathroom reading “Flush bathroom bigotry,” according to the group."

Let the disobedience begin! One attribute of anti-trans bathroom laws is that they're easy to publicly BREAK, and then you have the opportunity to make the people who passed the laws look like fools, stripping them of their credibility and power.

Congratulations to Hugo award-winning author G. Willow Wilson, the co-creator of Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), for dumping Twitter! This is what her Twitter profile page currently displays, with a huge "I've moved to Bluesky" backdrop that so far Twitter isn't censoring. I took this screenshot without logging in.
She also maintains a Mastodon presence at https://mastodon.social/@GWillow however she hasn't posted since 2023. Maybe in 2025 we can persuade her to return. 🙂

From the petition:
"The results are official only when every vote has been counted... On Election Night and in the immediate days afterwards, MAGA aligned forces, from Fox News commentators to billionaires like Elon Musk to fringe outlets like Newsmax may try and declare a Trump victory by vetoing the votes of Black, Brown, young and new Americans and spreading false claims on the platforms they control. We see through their BS because we know X Marks the Lie."

Get Free, an Anti-MAGA organization, has just launched the "X Marks the Lie" petition campaign to push back against the lies that we know we'll see on Musk's platform in the days immediately after the U.S. election. Professor Tim Snyder, author of On Tyranny, has recorded a brief message from the road about the decision of the billionaire owners of the Washington Post and L.A. Times to kiss the Trump ring.
"This strikes me as ignoring the essential thing that we were supposed to have learned from the 20th century which is, in circumstances like these, do not obey in advance".

HEADS UP: there are a lot of very low quality and outright grift/scam PACs now trying to exploit the Kamala Harris brand to raise money that then doesn't get spent to support Democrats. In many cases the funds get funneled to "consultants". Two articles:

From the NTFEC statement:
"... state ballot access laws are no obstacle to the party choosing a nominee other than President Biden. States have not yet printed ballots for the general election, and state laws across the country provide for the candidate chosen by the Democratic Party at or before the convention to appear on ballots this November irrespective of whether that nominee is the same individual as the party’s presumptive nominee"
