I still have a Twitter account, used only for reminding people at opportune times that both BlueSky and Mastodon are right there, and fine social media, and "here's an invite code to a mastodon server run someplace where Nazis are not welcome".

Open source software, sigh. "Enable track spectrogram view before

applying 'Spectral' effects." Right, just search "track spectrogram view" in the "help" menu so I can figure out how to do that, and of course, nothing found.

Sigh. Good thing we have search engines, people piss and moan about Google (my employer, as it happens) but as long as it saves me time, I'm going to use it.

Yet another climate change signal. No, we have not run a double blind experiment. Yes there's arguably patterns of development, too, but not like this in a single year.

Had not seen mention of this here, but from BSky: https://bsky.app/profile/o.simardcasanova.net/post/3letbbsvqgc2a

"Meta is testing, or has started to ship, its AI generated profiles, here on Instagram

www.instagram.com/himamaliv

[#]SocialWeb "

The idea is very bad, the profile is very bad. I am glad I quit Facebook after Cambridge Analytica (and why measure sentiment, when you can push it with pet bots?). Fuck this very much.

Car trouble

Cars are useful, but cars have problems.  Some of this is obvious but we don't want to notice it, so we don't, some of this is obvious but we treat it like some sort of weird we-have-no-alternatives dilemma (it's not).  Or, we make lame excuses. This is all pretty objective stuff, the main reason we ignore it is because when we drive we receive the benefits, and the costs are mostly somebody else's problem.

The phone camera's having a bit of an AI moment with the zoom and the dim light (I am wearing a headlamp), but those two bright spots are not bad pixels in the sensors, those are spiders' reflective eyes.

By-the-way, to bisect-debug this code, I had to add an if and a return in the right place (last chance to do new or old behavior), at line 969 and line 970 here (https://go-review.googlesource.com/c/go/+/636839/3/src/cmd/compile/internal/ssa/regalloc.go), rebuilt the compiler, and then I took the failing test, prefixed it with "bisect " (the command) and added the horrible compiler command line flag

" -gcflags=all=-d=gossahash=PATTERN"

and after that it was all automated, I watched The Expanse while it worked.

Turns out a 380MB html file full of debugging logs is too darn large for Chrome, even on a 96GB laptop. Safari's not given up yet, but hasn't succeeded, but Firefox actually did it.

And the answer is, "R3", duh, in code THAT I WROTE in an earlier CL in the stack (line 310): https://go-review.googlesource.com/c/go/+/636838/2/src/cmd/internal/obj/arm64/obj7.go

"We're trying to find the guy who did this."

BTW we have awesome tools to help with this debugging. I used "bisect" to pinpoint the fault, automatically.

From the department of noises, currently in my childhood home, which backs onto 2 acre (0.8 hectare) pond in as natural a state as a Florida pond embedded in a retirement community can be (it has an alligator, backyard has deer, owls, hawks, crows, turtles, snakes, and the coyotes serenade ambulance sirens).

I amplified as much as possible after removing pops, the ambient heat-pump-and-cars background noise sucks, but so it goes.

Where did Mr. CEO assassin get his e-bike, if it was not a Citibike, and where did he charge it? Even the cheap ones aren't cheap, and people don't just leave them lying around for use as handy escape vehicles.

Drivers, they are the best.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhaA1t4-qPg

(alt video: At night on bike approaching intersection with green. Cross traffic clogs intersection, oncoming driver wishes to turn left but cannot. Impatient driver from somewhere far back in the queue passes other waiting cars and would-be left-turner on left, oncoming in my lane. I slow down, incoming passes me (beep!), I give a thumbs up to left-turning driver as I pass. Someone else passes him on the right at the same time.)

Life on NextDoor: "It's hardly 'social myth' when so many people are consistently reporting the same phenomenon."

("It" is the claim that the majority of cyclists just blow right through red lights, contradicted by studies and video.)

News irrelevant to most people here, but Theo's Pizzeria in Belmont on Trapelo Road near Beech Street is open again. Of the walking-distance pizza places, they're the one I like best. The former owner is running it because reasons, but that means the pizza will be good. It's a little up the road from Wheelworks/Waverley Square, reachable on the #73, on a bike you can avoid the hill by riding Concord-Orchard-Beech.

Mastodon won't let me attach a .stl file, that's pretty lame. I've been working on a twist-on-twist-off travel cover for 18.5x85mm perfume bottles, made several mistakes, but this time, for sure. Also found a cheaper place to get them made, might make a few more molds for home-made silicone bicycle handlebar grips.
