Dropped to -18.3C at the house this morning after the light snow overnight. Grateful for the lack of wind. Working on old photos (and will be for a while). The nature sanctuary used to see a pair Trumpeter Swans every year, but when on of the pair died, the mate came less often. This is the last time I saw the bird. This is a case when you see the bird, you drop onto the trail and crawl through ice and mud to find openings for a shot. There were two of us taking photos, which eventually was too much for the bird. This was the last time I saw the bird.

Thinking about loading Mathematica and Wolfram Language on my Linux box. Always enjoyed playing those even though most of my technical MS and PhD students worked in MATLAB or some form of FEM application (ANSYS or Abacus). Maybe relearning those will keep my brain cell distracted.

We dropped to -13.3C this morning, luckily without wind. Still too cold for this old man to do much outside. Working on old photos again and ran across some of the feather studies from zoo days.

Happy Martin Luther King Junior Day to All.

Tomorrow I will celebrate Martin Luther King Day in honor of the man who fought for Civil Rights and was murdered because of his work and the color of his skin. I will not watch or celebrate the bastard that will destroy Civil Rights. From tomorrow on, flags should be flown in distress orientation. Resist

A cold Sunday morning for us: -10.6C with a wind chill of -18.3C (12.9F, -1F) had me working on old photos and updating the Linux box to Mint 22.1 Xia. Update went smoothly, but have not tried to reboot yet. A not so quiet Sunday. Stay warm out there.

An early hike at the Nature Center to check on the birds as the cold front was moving through. This past week was consumed by volunteer work. meetings and a funeral, so first day to really get out and walk. Birds were very active early on, then quieted as it became colder and more windy. Not sure if I can get out until later in the week since cold and I no longer get along very well.

My perception of the remains of democracy after Jan 20. Nothing left standing, all in disarray.

After reading what I could stomach about confirmation hearing yesterday, and those ongoing today, it is clear that America as we knew it is Dead. It will not revive in my lifetime, which I now see as quite limited - I do not expect to survive the Orange Fat Bastards term. Which wars are we fighting?

It's clear that the f-ing idiots will be confirmed for cabinet posts despite criminality, racism, bigotry, lies... That leads me to believe we are repeating parts of WW2 and parts of the Civil War.

As a reminder, Hitler destroyed German Democracy in very short order. Timeline

Still goofing with old photos mainly because I cannot bear to think about what happens a week from today.

This from 2011 using a Lumix FZ40 at Canyonlands National Park Island in the Sky District (one of my favorites) looking east through Mesa Arch toward the La Sal Mountains, near Moab. If you stop in Moab, be sure to check out the Moab Brewery - food is great, their craft beers are great, the root beer is outstanding! The original is low resolution so does not bear much enlarging.

With the 'heavy' (for us) snowfall, very little chance for a hike yesterday at the Nature Center. I spent most of the morning clearing our driveway, then helping to clear the entrance ramp, deck and ramp down to the trails at the Interpretive Center. As a result, I am barely able to move today. Lesson: Old men should not suddenly triple their caloric output for a day without adequate preparation. To top it off we got the latest Covid booster yesterday afternoon so sore and achy on top of sore and achy today. A preliminary snowfall total map for the region and one of a few photos taken before the shoveling commenced.

Looks like we recieved 10.1-15.2 cm (4-6 inches) of snow from winter storm Cora. All Schools in the area are closed for the day. Will start early to clear the drive then head out to the Nature Sanctuary for a hike, some photos (hopefully) and to help clear the access ramps to the interpretive center. Be kind, and check on those who are vulnerable in these conditions. Time to layer-up and start shoveling.

Just goofing with images before a visit with the audiologist who will tell me I can't hear worth crap. This from 2011 when a group of us were starting to plan the layout and scope of the book

Anniversary:

@thezenlady Fourty-eight years ago we started this whirlwind journey through life together. It has been a wild adventure and has gone by much too fast. During that time, we both have changed, and changed again. Thank you for saying "I do". Here is to many more adventures. An image of Gayle with her buddy Ava ❤️

An urgent reminder from a retired old prof that the Climate Crisis is the single greatest threat we face as a species. This is a global threat that transcends political boundaries - while the ravings of idiots like the GQP and the Orange Fat Bastard are a distraction, the crisis remains and deepens. Their policies will worsen the crisis, increase emissions, and speed warming; speed our demise. The threat to the Earth’s great spheres (biosphere, cryosphere …) is real and devastating. Remember extinction is the norm on this planet. The Earth is resilient, it will still be here when we drive ourselves to extinction. Human populations and systems are delicate, and prone to collapse under environmental stress. Ignore the noise from the clowns and push for meaningful action world-wide.

A nice brisk hike this morning to get out in the chill air to check on trails and keep away from the news madnes. And keep rebuilding strength. Temps dropped to -13.9C overnight with a wind chill of -17C. It has been much colder in years past, but this seemed quite cold enough. It seems that cold hits me harder as I age, so it was tough to get many photos. Working on a few, but none ready to post. Tomorrow will be our 48th, so will post some photos to celebrate that anniversary.

Here is the Moment Tensor Solution for the 7.1 Mww earthquake in Tibet this morning. Finite Fault Solutions have been determined for both potential nodes yielding either ~1.5 or ~1.25 meters of displacement. At the time of this post, 95 fatalities have been reported.

The winter storm for us has been mostly cold with a trace of snow. Temps dropped to -10C overnight with wind chills of -17.2C. The only challenge was has been keeping the bird feeders full, and keeping the feral cats at bay. I set up a fencing 'topology' trap for them so their minimum attack distance is ~4meters, and there is no straight-line attack vector, only curved arcs. This gives the birds time to flush when they see the cats trying to approach. That has reduced the number of bird kills from 1-2 daily to zero in the past month.
