[#]WritersCoffeeClub 4 February. Do you ever read back your work and surprise yourself with what you’ve written?

In a couple of instances I have. Each have been some emotional scene and surprised me how gut-wrenching I managed to make them.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 3 February. Do you agree with Thomas Mann, who said, “A writer is a person for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people.”

I always thought that quotation was aimed at a character in the book - Tristan.

I guess my answer would depend on what day you were asking the writer.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 2 February. Do you analyze structure and technique in other writer’s work?

Not consciously, maybe when I read if something stands out I might sort of take note of it.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 1st Feb: Shameless self-promotion. What writing project are you working on?

Just started 1st round of edits from my publisher. Have book 5 from a series due for release 21st Feb.

Working on book 7 in the series (bk 6 has been submitted and accepted by my publisher). Not happy with the heroine in bk 7 & sent the partial manuscript to my beta reader to see what they think.

Also working on a Romance/murder, only have a couple more chapters to write on the first draft.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 31 January. How’s your writing progress so far this year? What are you working on?

Progress - one book (book 5 in series) due for release 21st Feb & I just got the edits from my publisher for another book.

Working on - that final book in the series I've previously mentioned is still causing me grief, so I’ve put it aside to continue working on my romance/murder.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 30 January. Do secondary characters sometimes get promoted to main characters?

Certainly do. Have a series published at the moment (5 books out, 6th out 21st Feb), with one more book (the 7th) left to write.

Each of the main secondary characters have gotten their own book.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 29 January. How do you format your drafts? Is it the same as the final manuscript?

I write my drafts using Scrivener. Love how I can move stuff around, save research, links, pictures, etc.

The final manuscript is alway converted to a Word doc - 12pt, double spaced, Time New Roman because that's the format my publisher wants their submissions in.

Took a few days break after the 'empathy' thing.

I want to thank all those who took time to write in support, it certainly helped me get over feeling rejected and wanting to quit the writers' club.

My 'lack of empathy' obviously has no effect on my writing. In reviews of every book I've had published (30) there are comments about the reader crying, laughing, feeling emotional, etc, so obviously I can write with empathy even if I don't recognise it...🤪 😊

Anyway, thanks again for your support.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 23 January. Empathy? Been reading through the posts on this topic and have to say majority seem to consider it vital and without it you're evil, uncaring, etc and unable to write truthfully, (words I've seen used in posts about this topic).

I'm neurodivergent. I can't empathise with others. When I write, it's my feelings I describe, and yes sometimes they are odd, sometimes over-the-top. Many neurodivergent people lack the ability. We aren't 'evil', uncaring, horrible, etc, we just see and feel things differently.

My initial reaction when reading the posts was to 'drop out' of Writers Coffee Club because that's my immediate reaction when I can't cope with something. Instead I took a deep breath and decided to comment.

Shoot me down, it's fine, but at least I had my say.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 23 January. Do you think it’s vital for a fiction writer to have empathy?

Considering I’m autistic I tend to get overwhelmed by someone displaying emotions. I can't 'read' emotions. Instead I usually become confused, uncomfortable, and withdraw as a coping mechanism rather than say or do the wrong thing. So my empathy is rather skewed.

For me, the empathy/emotions in my work are dramatic over-the-top, punch-to-the-gut, ramblings because mine are that way.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 22 January. What prompted you to begin writing?

A dare by a friend. I’d never considered writing. I was in my mid 60s and made a little extra money by painting art commissions. One day I made a stupid comment about a book we'd both read, saying I could write something better. She dared me to. So I did.

My story had nothing to do with the original book but she loved it, then double-dared me to send it to a publisher. Challenge accepted - I did.

Shock and amazement, it was accepted and the rest is history. 30 books with two publishers later, I still thank her with each new contract I sign.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 21 January. what differences do you find in your process if you write both short and long-form?

I only write long-form, never written anything under 30k. Most of my published works are around 70-80k.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 20 January. Do any of your stories take place on the sea? In what way?

Nope. Have a book where the main character paints pictures of the sea but none where they are on it.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 19 January. Did you find a way through the maze of traditional publishing to get your book published? What’s your secret?

Secret? – luck and a well-written, good story.

I’m one of the lucky few who sent off my first manuscript and had it accepted by that publisher. Never had a rejection slip.

Then after 17 books with them, I submitted a MS to another publisher in 2019. I wasn’t completely happy with my old publisher’s recent editing.

Once again I had that MS accepted. Been with the new publisher ever since.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 18 January. Would you serve as a judge for a literary award?

Unless the award was for something specifically in my writing niche genre, or the genre I read, I don’t think I could judge it properly.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 17 January. What are your biggest fears for the writing world in 2025?

That people don’t come to their senses and they write books using AI instead of their own imagination. Type in ‘write a book using AI’ into Google, scary the amount of results you get.

This clause is in my publisher’s contract.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 16 January. How would you describe the way you create your stories to a non-writer?

My head is stuffed full of imagination, weird stuff, and 'people'. Therefore I have to clear it on a regular basis or it will explode.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 15 January. Would you ever hide your politics to avoid alienating some readers?

Never written anything political unless you count LBGTQ+ characters. Many of my books have them, both as main and secondary.
