In the programme we saw many people who played big roles in the development of geology and Earth sciences.
I always remember Fred Vine because he came across as someone you knew you'd get along with. It felt almost like you had known him for years after watching his segments in the programme.

One of the things that set Manning apart from many other presenters was in one moment when he was handed a meteorite and told it was probably the oldest object on Earth.
Presenters nowadays would say "Wow!", but Manning held the rock and quietly contemplated its age. It was a wonderful moment that underlined his depth of thought and appreciation for our planet.

Earth Story was presented by the late Aubrey Manning. A biologist by training, he presented the programme in a thoughtful way as someone who was setting out to learn what Earth Science is all about.
I attended a talk he delivered at the Royal Philosophical Society of Glasgow and it was the best talk I've ever heard, particularly the Q&A at the end when I felt I could listen to him all night.

Sad to learn today that geologist and geophysicist Fred Vine had died in June.
