I've been running linux on my main PC for a few years now, but wanted a bit of a change from the Cinnamon desktop environment. I fancied giving KDE a go, so wiped my boot drive and installed Arch BTW*.

Went pretty well and I've gotten most of my stuff reinstalled and working well. Here's looking forward (/s) to the first update cycle and see how well everything survives.

So, after the upcoming moderation changes over at #Meta, I've scheduled the deletion of my #Facebook and #Instagram accounts.

Going to be annoying given our local community seem to arrange and communicate everything over Facebook... but I cannot abide the thought that I'm supporting a Company that is comfortable promoting and supporting hate speech.

I think I mentioned, I recently built myself a DIY V2 #PiKVM as a bit of a project.

I decided to document my build in case I need to rebuild it, or if anyone finds it interesting.

https://github.com/fishd72/diy-pikvm/blob/main/README.md

Links are all UK focused (as that's where I am) but should give folks a good idea of what to look for.

I'm going to find this really useful for my 3 node mini-pc #homelab ... especially once I add in power control using a #Tapo smart power strip (https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DBQ26ZNL).

Today in #Valheim ...

I got a frend!

Started a new shared world as I managed to convince one of my oldest friends to play!

So, here's (the imaginatively named ) Fishd in the grounds of a new base!

Let's gooooooooo!

Today in #Valheim ...

... was mainly running a cart full of ore across an island to where I could launch a ship.

Then sail a small sea (doesn't seem right to call it an ocean) ... then smelt a load of ore into bars.

So, no screenshot as was all a bit "chore"y.

Still, a good haul of iron should see me mostly upgraded and ready to take on bonemass. Just need to pick our tactics.

Today in #Valheim ...

More "Cosy-heim" today. Asta brought some upgrades to her little hut. This probably is the last required upgrade for her little hamlet in the Meadows, on to bigger things soon.

She was also raided twice tonight! Once by trolls and again by foul minions from the swamp. Both groups were sent packing.

So... the question is... what distro do you run on the computer that you need so you can have (multiple pages of) the wiki open whilst you're installing #archlinux #btw ?

Starting a laptop selection process. Thinking about moving away from Apple Silicon as despite its many advantages… virtualisation is very limited so the testing and development I want to do in a localised homelab environment is just not possible.

Thinking my wish list is:

Need: Linux compatibility, 15-16 inch screen with 16:10 aspect ratio, two NVME slots for upgradable / swappable storage, 8+ hrs battery life, at least 32Gb RAM, USB-C charging, USB4 / Thunderbolt, quiet fans, no throttling

Want: TKL keyboard, Ryzen APU, 2880x1800 display, High refresh rate display (120-165hz) with Freesync / VRR, fingerprint reader, 64gb 7500mt/s DDR5 RAM, upgradable slot for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5+

Do NOT want: Windows, non-x86_64 CPU

Don’t care about: Soldered vs socketed RAM, OLED display, dedicated GPU

Currently got my eye on the Starlabs Starfighter (though might be vapourware?), Framework 16 (but not convinced by cooling, single NVME slot and price), Lenovo P16s Gen2 (concerns are: single NVME, keypad, Lenovo brand)

Anyone aware of others?

Post might be edited if I think of other requirements.

Today in #Valheim ...

Asta gathered some more iron ore, made herself a better axe and improved her iron armour.

She now reviews the progress made on her new outpost at the edge of the swamp... there's a lot of wood cutting in her future... hopefully she made the axe sharp and true.

Today in #valheim ...

Asta completed some new chores... and ended up looking pretty swanky.

She's disappointed that there is no cape to match though, maybe something using a wraith trophy is required?

The new base is ... progressing. It's taken a lot of stone to get to this point and Asta is not happy with it yet, so there is no picture.

Perhaps it will be razed to the ground and started again.

Today in #Valheim ... Asta decided to vent her frustration from recent events... and who better to receive her ire than the Elder... maybe his head on a spike will show Odin her commitment and he will grant her the strength required to defeat her nemesis, the troll she has decided to call Fergir.

So, to the woods she went... and return with his head, she did.

The Elder's head adorns the stone... as will the heads of all of Odin's foes, this Asta vows.

Today in #Valheim ...

Oh, mighty Odin... how fickle is your will?

Today Asta sailed the open seas... a short and speedy trip to an island visible on the horizon and once she made landfall, she set to exploring and conquering this island as well.

Taking stock of the land, she noticed some curious tracks that were neither troll, nor greydwarf... something smaller, that walked alongside something much, much larger and tracks, like those of a wagon.

Following these for some time through the black forest, she came upon a clearing and the most intriguing sight.

A small dark dwarf, not grey and shambling like the usual denizens of the forest, but with cunning in his eyes and a friendly tone.

Soon, friendship was made and deals were struck... great value he placed on the gemstones and amber Asta had found on her travels and in exchange for coin, he provided a strange belt and a circlet that gave off an other-worldly glow. Useful, these will be.

However, as so often with life, trouble was around the next corner.

Asta heard the troll easily, smelled it easier than that... so it wasn't too hard to track to it's lair... she readied her polearm and proceeded to sneak into the dark, as she has done so many times before.

Was it hubris or carelessness? Does it even matter?

Too late our heroine noticed the strange blue hue of the trolls skin, something that marked it apart from it's lumbering kin... something that should have been a warning... deep within it's lair, where she stalked her prey... she met her end. The huntress becoming the hunted.

Try as she might, she could not recover her items. The troll guards them greedily, and can be heard laughing all across the south of this isle.

Today in #valheim ...

Asta was a fountain of industry... she went mining, she smelted it into bars and then forged it into a pickaxe!

She's probably also got enough bronze left for a mace too.

So, now her thoughts turn to her next enemy, the Elder.

She knows where he hides, she has the equipment, all that is left is to pick the time.

Soon she says, soon.

Anyone able to help with a #debian question?

I've a small script I run on my linux workstation that takes the latest debian #ISO, injects a preseed.cfg file into the initrd.gz file and repackages the ISO.

This all works great on amd64 hardware.

I'd now like to do something similar on my laptop, which runs #macOS... the script mostly works fine, except that the step to inject the preseed.cfg file uses the command “cpio -H newc -o -A -F initrd” ... this is then compressed into a gz file etc etc.

Now, on macOS, according to the man page for cpio the ‘-A' option is “not yet implemented” ... and, for reasons I’ll not bore you with, Homebrew isn't an option (to just install the GNU versions of these tools).

Is there an alternative way to pipe this file into the initrd file? It's not something I'm overly familiar with.

The use case is to have a custom ISO file I can use for VM builds that has a custom user account with a pre-configured SSH key in place, to make bootstrapping via Ansible easier.

Ta.

Got my #Valheim dedicated server running again and created "Brotnaverǫld" ... where Asta fights for Odin and her place in Valhalla.

So far she's fought the creatures of the meadows, some of the Greydwarves from the neighbouring Black Forest and definitely hasn't died two or three times from falling trees! (Unlocking finewood without a bronze axe is not without risk!)

Her little fortified homestead provides some security and allows a brief rest before she faces Eikthyr.

Going to take down the foul stag so Asta can start mining but then I think it'll be a slow progression whilst she builds out a little village... I might even look to open up the server and invite a few fellow Vikings along to help in the building and fighting ...

So yeah, turns out it's an issue with the strfile process.

I swallowed my pride, installed homebrew on another Mac to install the fortune utility (and therefore get the strfile binary, which was missing from my original macOS package for some reason) and then running the command on macOS, this now works.

Odd.

Anyone still using #fortune-mod ?

I've got it installed on #macOS and #Linux #Debian ... and then created a custom fortunes file for it. I've created the accompanying .dat file and copied them to the appropriate folder.

The file works perfectly under Linux, but not under macOS, I just get the entire file printed out but the characters are gibberish (interestingly, the % signs used to separate comments are still in place).

Is the strfile binary output specific to an architecure? I created it on linux and copied it over to macOS... could that be the issue?

Caved and ordered a #SteamDeck OLED as an upgrade from my LCD unit.

A few hours later, AMD announced that the Z2 Extreme will be released early next year.

I am cursed. And excited.
