Prompted by @kenwhite.bsky.social asking a question about how to un-watermark images, and not finding a good introductory post in a few minutes of searching, I wrote up a thing!

https://makenorth.ca/blog/anonymizing-documents/

This is intended to be a short and non-exhaustive introduction to watermarking, fingerprinting, and basic methods to mitigate those tactics. This is not a comprehensive guide and you should not take (just) my word on this, especially if you're worried about very well-resourced actors.

If anyone has additional links, thoughts, etc., feel free to send me a pull request over on GitHub:

@alex Hello! I just came across your (very interesting) "A Year of CoreOS Home Server" and related GitHub repo. I had a few questions, if you don't mind–no urgency on any of them, and feel free to decline if you'd prefer to not answer 😃

  1. It looks like you don't declare a persistent volume when installing on bare metal, but rely on rclone backups of container volumes to backup/restore data, and the coreos-home-server-update unit to update configuration; is that right?

  1. How often do you find yourself re-installing everything, vs. updating in-place with coreos-home-server-update?

  1. What do you actually run the OS on? I'm looking to run inside a Proxmox VM; are you running on actual bare metal, or in a VM somewhere?

Thanks! Very interesting stuff.

Okay, courtesy of @shadowspar I just discovered an incredible #solar installation: a United Church in Wawa, Ontario, installed four sets of solar panels on their roof... in the shape of crosses!

Really neat to see people using the panels themselves as art or for things other than just generating power.
