"This radicalized population erupted in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, leading to one of the largest mass movements we had seen in our lifetimes, too. The intertwined nature of racial capitalism was newly visible, as people stuck at home began connecting the dots between our insatiable economy and the death drive of whiteness itself. Our country was rotten to the core, and we finally went outside to join with others and do something about it."

… and more worthy excerptsβ€” a very good piece.

Powerful article on the social vs biological "ends" of #COVID

”Denial is a powerful force, the engine of the cognitive dissonance that we see in the CVS ad campaign. By denying the value of human life, the millions of Covid deaths, and the new disability running rampant through our populations, we are able to manufacture the social end of a pandemic even in the midst of its biological peaks…”

The quoted sentence is an example of what it describes. Replace enough of those words or move them around, and the meaning they convey together disappears!

It has been years since Twitter fell. Twitter had been struggling to find a better future for a long time before that.

Then a sometimes-main-character billionaire swooped in, thinking, β€œWhat if I could be the main character, all the time?” $44B later, the psychopath pulled off Twitter’s wings and watched it scurry, flightless and confused.

If someone is angry that Mastodon is losing out to Bluesky, they probably expected it to be something it isn’t.

I’ll explain what I mean, but first some background… (1/x)

The world is a big, complex, ever changing place. Rarely is it about "winning." More often it is about "thriving." When I encounter competition language, I pause to consider whether the goal is to have exclusive rights. Whatever is being framed as contested, is it actually something that if we had it then others wouldn't?

I would prefer to grow a market rather than to fight for market share, myself.

Competition culture is so pervasive and seeps into our language. Phrases like "SWAT Team" (or Tiger Team) or "War Room" escalate tensions. Do you really need to invoke heavily armed life-or-death stakes?

Sports metaphors similarly take a winner-take-all view. This frames the situation as power-over. That removes the opportunity to take a power-with stance. While there are times where it may make sense, often it is simply our language default.

@rklau To say a bit more:

[#]1 removed uncertainty (Will I actually qualify? How much work will it take?) and also completely removed the burden of filing and chasing that paperwork.

[#]2 I'm not knowledgeable enough to make an informed judgment when researching and choosing an installer. Plus, I've been burned enough by "add-on work" to be wary. Onsemble brokered the relationship and then acted like a mediator to ensure that both parties worked better together and that my expectations were met.

Like @rklau, I also replaced our gas water heater with a heat pump in March. Two game-changing aspects about Onsemble:

  1. They front the incentives, meaning the out-of-pocket costs are built-in to the job.

  1. They are outcome-oriented, meaning they mediate the relationship with the plumber/electrician.

One way to explain platform engineering is as "official" glue work, where official means that the business value has been well-articulated.

While I'd like to see other social networks copy this feature, I don't expect that to happen given the trickiness of mapping it to core metrics.

One of my favorite features of Mastodon is the private note you can leave for yourself about any user on their profile page. I find it useful to remind future me why I chose to follow someone.
