Self-install AsusWRT-Merlin on Asus router: WireGuard and encrypted DNS are essential, and the firmware comes with more security settings than the typical ISP router. If TrendMicro is trusted, the extra security they offer for Asus routers can be turned on.

InvizBox: Not as powerful as the previous 2 and not as many features. For example, only speeds up to 100Mbps. Privacy policy could be better, website doesn't comply with the rules and doesn't seem like the router is maintained. (Don't understand why Proton VPN has them as partners...?).

GL.iNet: Pre-installed OpenWRT, but is located in Hong Kong and has embedded code from Huawei for analytics and etc. even though they state in the App Store and Google Play that data is not collected... Privacy policy is not very impressive either.

Netgate router with pfSense: UI and setup is more complicated than the previous ones, but should be easy to use with good explanations once you get started. I have seen some talking about problems with pfSence Plus, but haven’t looked into it yet.

I'm looking for an out-of-the-box privacy-oriented router for a tech novice but am having a hard time finding one. I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations. So far, I've looked at the following models, but with some skepticism:

Firewalla: Has an incredible amount of features and claims to offer security and privacy. But paradoxically, Google Analytics is embedded in their app to control the router (and their website etc. does not comply with GDPR). Furthermore, it is unclear how the network traffic on the router is handled and what is shown is not impressive. Would otherwise be the perfect router, unfortunately.

Vilfo: Some good features, but has the same problem as Firewalla with Google embedded in their software...
