Donny isn't thrilled with this outfit, but he seems to mind it less than the cone, and it does prevent him from licking the sore spot above his paw. He is wearing a size 3T t-shirt that I bought from Goodwill for this same purpose for another dog years ago.

Morning, Mastodon friends! Today is our last "warm" day before we head into a period of much lower temps, freezing rain, and then snow. I plan on good walks and outdoor training with the dogs this afternoon. Other tasks for the day include getting my documents together to apply for a passport, downloading my Social Security data, calling my Senators, writing postcards, and pooper-scooping the yard. (1/2)

On this unusually warm (for Feb. in Iowa) and sunny afternoon, Donny and I worked on some parkour exercises. Here are two of them -- putting front paws up on an object that moves and crawling under an object shorter than his withers.

Good morning, Mastodon friends! It's overcast, but we're headed for highs near 50F today and tomorrow. Then it gets colder again, so we'll enjoy pleasant walking while we can.
Having licked open a sore on his foot again, Donny is sad to be back in a cone.
Since we'll be flying blind on bird flu, Covid, flu, RSV and other airborne diseases, I've been stocking up on face masks before tariffs affect prices on Chinese products.
Have a safe day, and as good a one as possible.

"Pres Donald Trump has vowed to slash the federal workforce, implement hiring freezes, and revive Schedule F, a policy that strips civil service protections and allows career professionals to be replaced by political appointees. If that happens, the veterinarians protecting our food, farms, and health could be gone overnight.
The consequences? Mass food shortages, disease outbreaks, and economic devastation.

Postdocs are people with Ph.D. degrees who hold temporary positions performing mentored research. Their salaries typically are quite low and come from research grants held by their mentors. The NSF freeze in salary payments is severely affecting postdocs.

Good morning, Mastodon friends! And it's a very rainy morning in eastern IA, which is a good thing because we need the water and I'd rather it came as rain than snow. I do hope it will stop by early afternoon as predicted so that the dogs and I can walk.
I made a bigger batch of sourdough bread dough than usual this morning. Part of it will make naan to go with leftovers of yesterday's lentil curry.
Have a safe day, all, and try to find some joy in it.

Trump Administration's Halt of CDC's Weekly Report Stalls Bird Flu Studies
The Trump administration has intervened in the release of important studies on the bird flu, as an outbreak escalates across the United States.
One of the studies would reveal whether veterinarians who treat cattle have been unknowingly infected by the bird flu virus. Another report documents cases in which people carrying the virus might have infected their pet cats.

Here is this week's Americans of Conscience checklist. It was posted on Jan. 24, so it's already too late to oppose Hegseth's nomination. However, the other recommended actions are still current. Supporting H.R. 492 is important and may be effective -- that bill even has 2 Republican cosponsors. https://americansofconscience.com/01-24-2025/

Good morning, Mastodon friends! We're expecting a warm afternoon after a chilly morning, then rain this evening into tomorrow morning. I'll walk the dogs after a quick Costco run.
Despite my walking on it a lot, my foot seems to be healing after my fall 3 weeks ago. It's not back to normal yet, but well on the way.
Wishing everyone a safe day.

Good morning, Mastodon friends! I'm finally really feeling back to normal after the colonoscopy. Yay!
Yesterday the dogs and I took our longest walks so far of 2025. Today is another warm (predicted high of 48F) and sunny day, so we may do it again. 😀
I may be ruining my day, however -- I'm watching RFK Jr's confirmation hearing.
Have a safe day, and as good a one as possible.

" I think it's exactly what's happening. And we're going to see more human cases related to that. The poultry industry is doomed to have challenge after challenge if they don't change the way they house these birds. They're going to have to find a way to have airtight buildings with only HEPA filter air coming in the intake and HEPA filter air being sent out the backside. If that doesn't happen, I convince eggs are going to be an expensive commodity for a long time to come. " (4/4)

Here's a quotation from near the end of the podcast: "H5N1 is not going away. This is a brand-new type of virus activity within wild birds spilling over into domestic production and as well as into humans. I know that my description today of a world with lots of migratory waterfowl poop blowing in the wind with virus attached to it may not seem appealing to many, but I think it's real." (continued in next comment) (3/4)

He says that blowing dust from the feces of infected birds may also explain the 3 humans with confirmed infections but no known contact with infected animals. If that's the case, he says we must be missing many other infections in people.
The link in the first post in this thread has both the audio and the transcript of the podcast. The transcript, while poor, is very understandable.
The podcast ends with a segment on the history and successes of the World Health Organization.(2/4)
