Interested in computer audio? The 3rd print run of the revamped edition of SAM Revival magazine issue 11 is on the way! SAM Revival is the magazine I produce catering for the quirky, British SAM Coupe computer, with issue 11 focusing purely on sound. Originally released in 2004, last year I fully revamped the back issue in full colour and professionally printed for release at the 'Synthesized' show at the CfCH.

The issue covers the SAM Coupe's audio capabilities in great detail - software - internal soundchip (SAA1099P) - additional sound hardware such as my own 'Quazar Surround' soundcard I released back in 1995.

More importantly there's a 19 track audio CD exploring the SAM's sound. Even if you don't own a SAM Coupe if you're interested in what this humble 8-bitter can do it's well worth a listen!

After Robert's use of the ZXTT (ZX True Tone) module in his DTMF touch tone project here: https://mastodonapp.uk/@robertprice/113760746291278416 there's been a fair bit of interest and I've just finished soldering up and testing a fresh batch. They're available through my Tindie store: https://www.tindie.com/stores/quazar/ and eBay: https://ebay.co.uk/usr/quazar-sam-coupe-sales or just contact me directly!

Released in 2021 it's an add-on module for the YM/AY #RC2014 soundcard to clock it identically to the 128K ZX Spectrum for pitch perfect tones.

While MGT did go bust in June'90 the SAM Coupe lived on for quite a while, far longer than what is often incorrectly quoted in blogs / articles / magazines etc.

The SAM was available to buy up to early 1999 through several companies - the first being SAM Computers Ltd (SAMCo) founded by Alan and Bruce again.

May 1990 - MGT launches a competition with first place of £15,000 for the best SAM Coupe game by the end of the year. The following month MGT goes bust.

What did you hope to see games wise on the SAM Coupe? My last BIG game was Stratosphere in 1997. Perhaps after my next round of hardware releases I should consider another game. 🤔

SAM Revival issue 18 features some source code in the magazine for the #SAMCoupe to copy the two layer scrolling effect used in the #Amiga demo 'Hit Fido'. The cover disk with this issue features emulators for the Orao, Galaksija and Apple 1 machines, proving the SAM can emulate more than just the #ZXSpectrum! There's also two games - Defender and Captain Comic, plus the executable of the 'Fido' demo code too.

The next part of Robert Price's journey exploring DTMF touch tones on the #RC2014 with source code for generating the DTMF tone pairs in #Z80 assembly with Ed Brindley's AY soundcard and my ZXTT module:

For anyone interested I've ZXTT modules ready in stock, available directly here:

eBay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/116425992600

Released in August 2021 the ZXTT clocks the AY/YM soundchip at the same exact frequency as the ZX Spectrum 128K computers.

An interesting use for the RC AY/YM soundcard with the ZXTT to generate DTMF tones here:

ZXTT is my add-on for Ed Brindley's RC2014 card to use the AY-3-8910/12 / YM2149. Released in August 2021 the ZXTT clocks the soundchip at the same exact frequency as the ZX Spectrum 128K computers, so if you're playing back ZX Spectrum music it sounds pitch perfect!

First launched back in 2007, the Trinity Ethernet Interface quickly became a quintessential expansion for the SAM Coupe. Offering Ethernet connectivity and mass storage using SD & SDHC cards up to 64GB it gives the SAM a native storage solution to escape from floppy disks!

Some of the original plans and wishful thinking for the SAM Coupe, from an unveiling article in New Computer Express a year before it launched - the April'89 launch date came and went, with it finally shipping in December'89.

Some specifications were expanded in the following year due to changing the size and manufacturer of the custom ASIC chip, e.g. more colours.

35 Years of the SAM Coupe! The first few hundred SAMs shipped out just before Christmas in December 1989, with some even hand delivered by MGT staff. I've been developing for this quirky British #8bit system for nearly 32 years.

Hardware, software, 'SAM Revival' magazine, repairs. Doing what I can to keep this wonderful system alive.

When I started with electronics as a very young kid the first book I was bought in 1981 ("Simple Electronics", 50 pence well spent!) used wood and screws for constructing circuits. This tatty book is so responsible for so much... leading to an electronics degree, industrial system designing and some awards! 😆

The flip flop circuit from the book was the very first circuit I laid out and soldered on stripboard, this was during a 3 day work experience placement when I was at high school in 1989.
