Mr Absolutive, in searching for a pair of cufflinks (long story), uncovered his lanyard and ID from a previous school in the US where he used to teach.

'Oh, look,' I said, 'there's a rape whistle attached.'

'No,' he said. 'It's for school shootings.'

I'm not really on IG anymore, because meta, etc., so here's my most recent art! I learned the galaxy-painting technique from a session taught by Lieve Oudejans, and the geometric pattern is #7 from Ameet Hindocha's book '12 Twelves'.

(Please don't judge the geometry too much; I had to paint the lines freehand because if I used a ruler it took forever for them to dry. Also, they didn't show up through the watercolour as clearly as I'd hoped)

I'm still looking for participants for an experiment language processing. About 20-25 minutes, with a variety of tasks to measure memory, sound detection, comprehension and prediction.

Please help the advance of #science! And #linguistics and #psycholinguistics.

Do you want to do an experiment about language processing? It takes about 20-25 minutes, and there are a variety of tasks to measure memory and sound detection and comprehension and prediction.

Anyone who wants to make a joke about time travel messing up verb tenses should talk to a linguist about Neo-Reichenbachian frameworks of tense/aspect marking before claiming that languages can't handle it.

Ok, I'm reading That Article in the New Yorker, and I'm quite struck by the final paragraph:

Girl: It DID happen to somebody else. That was the whole Addison Cain Omegaverse debacle! You're ripping off Zoey Ellis! Except not, because these two things happened to be independently identical.

It's too meta. I need to have a stiff drink and lie down.

Somehow, someone, somewhere, decided that I, an experimental psycholinguist, was the appropriate person to review a funding application about performative face theory in the context of middle-aged female body builders, and THANK YOU SO MUCH.

This stuff is FASCINATING.

Psst: Authors, the word you're looking for is 'lain', not 'lied'.

I appreciate the desire to maintain a distinction between 'lay' and 'lie', but all you're doing here is making me think about analogical leveling as a type of language change, and it really pulls me out of the story.

Just a reminder that 'The book of my enemy has been remaindered', by Clive James, is a celebration of the delightfully petty urges that we all hold in our bosoms. Yes, even you.

Round 1 reviewer 2: 'Not enough references! Add this list, you have to cite them all.'

PhD student: 'um, ok'. [adds references]

11 months pass

Round 2 reviewer 2: 'Good grief, why so many references?'

(Boosts welcome!)

Hi, everyone! Would you help me norm some stimuli for an experiment I'm running? I need

-Over 18

-Native English speaker (ANY VARIETY)

It takes about 20-25 minutes start to finish, so make a cup of tea first.

Please note: the software sometimes hangs between trials. It will come back and continue after a few seconds. You can check your instagram in the meantime if you like.

Super-super nice IT guy couldn't come over in person, but on Teams chat he walked me through the steps of opening the computer, identifying the RAM sticks, and removing them, one at a time, to see if one was faulty. If so, then removing the faulty one and restarting the computer should fix things.

After removing the first RAM stick, the computer started!

'Oh,' thought I. 'Does this mean we need to replace the faulty RAM stick?'

'Not so fast!' said nice IT guy over TEAMs. 'Try swapping both RAM sticks from black ports to white ports.'

So I did! And the computer started up!

So the problem wasn't even a faulty RAM stick, but a faulty RAM port!

AND I FIXED IT!

I FEEL SO POWERFUL!

(Also very grateful to IT guy, who knew exactly what to do and trusted me to do it myself.)

(It also didn't hurt that the computer was past due for replacement, and I already had approval in place to get a new one, so it wasn't as if there was any real risk in meddling with its guts.)

No, that didn't fix it. BUT! It brought it to a state where BEEP CODES could be produced!

Some googling of beep codes for my brand of computer told me that this indicated a memory fault.

At this point, I got in touch with IT. (IT were already aware of the issue, but it's final exams season, and I have my own laptop, so it's okay that it wasn't a priority).
