[#]WritersCoffeeClub 10-2 can write traumatic scenes?

My debut novel features a trauma-powered magic system and builds to a climax with an entire chapter of a 1st-person account of a dissociative episode fueled by a traumatic trigger

Also, I’m a therapist, & I believe I’ve done this responsibly

So… um, yes, I’d say so.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 9-16 cover artist

I haven’t been posting much lately. My health has taken a turn, and I’m struggling to keep up. But I wanted to give a shout-out to @AngelaGuyton for this prompt

I did my own cover art for both Paths of Memory books, but for Common Accord, I wanted a style that I definitely couldn’t manage. Angela did an amazing job and I can’t wait to show off the cover. I’ll probably do a cover reveal sometime next month

I'm super excited to announce the title of my 3rd novel, coming later this year:

COMMON ACCORD

A blue-collar space opera set in a future of inter-species trade & politics.

I write on my laptop. I can type so much faster than I can write by hand. Scrivener can keep up with me.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 9-10 birthdays, etc

In A Memory of Blood and Magic (https://books2read.com/AMoBaM-KNBrindle), we see a couple of birthdays…

The book starts with Arin's birth, so there's one 😉

We also see their 9th birthday traditions in some detail, though not everything goes smoothly.

I haven't featured birthdays or anniversaries elsewhere, as they haven't been relevant to the story.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 9-9 book festivals?

I would love to attend book festivals or conventions. Between family obligations, chronic illness, financial pressure, & living in the southern US, I'm not really sure how to make that happen 🤷

Her “Foreigner” series is a huge inspiration for me, and a fantastic example of applying genuinely alien culture to political thriller to produce a unique genre of storytelling.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 9-8 The Hero's Journey is garbage. Discuss.

I wasn't going to answer this one, because I thought I had nothing to add to the many people who've already answered. But turns out I do:

Why would I spend any time worrying about what pattern some old white dude decided (with no evidence or real research) that all stories follow?

I read & write. My stories are shaped the way they are shaped 🤷 and I like to read stories that are shaped the way they're shaped 🤷

Side-note: I actually do have a cleric character in D&d, but she’s an atheist. It’s a whole thing 😅

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 9-7 what genre will I not write?

Religious. For me, that goes well beyond Christian storytelling. I don’t include a religious basis in my fantasy either. I don’t accept that a religious viewpoint is inherent to social development, so I will not have “active gods” or “systemic belief in gods” be a foundational part of my worldbuilding. I’d be terrible at it anyway, because I wouldn’t be able to world-build it with a straight face

Same reason I can’t play a Cleric in d&d

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 9-3: Do writers read differently from non-writers?

I don't think I read any differently now than I did before I started writing. Was I “a writer" before I wrote?

I think it's more useful to say “some people read with more intention & vigilance than others, and some of those people become writers.”

Well if you told me you were drowning

I would not lend a hand

I've seen this workplace before, my friend

But I don't know if you know who I am

I was there and I saw what you paid

I saw it with my own two eyes

Well you can wipe off that grin

I know all your spin

It's all been a pack of lies
