Not the best approach for large scale agriculture, but possibly actionable for small farms.

Luckily there's more wood ash around in winter.

"As a Source of Potassium. If the soil is acid (below pH 6.0), wood ashes can be used as a source of potassium. Assuming there is 6 percent K2O in ashes, 1 ton/A. (50 lb./1000 sq. ft.) will provide 120 lb./A. of K2O (2.8 lb./1000 sq. ft.). This is adequate for most gardens, lawns, & shrubs. However, nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers may still be needed. Continued use of ashes on the same site or at high rates could raise the soil pH too high—particularly in sandy soils"

A couple plant-related things in this sad history, including getting a clue as to what caused Celiac Disease when people who suffered from it had their symptoms abate during a famine where wheat products were highly rationed. When wheat was re-introduced, the symptoms returned.

Doing my usual anti-ableist work of asking questions about accessibility at a webinar. One of the presenters saw the Q and wants to address it. The webinar is also being recorded so not only does this introduce the idea of accessibility to the webinar attendees and presenters, but also to anyone who will watch the recording in future.

Get people thinking about accessibility. #UCAccessNow #BotanicalGardens #a11y #Accessibility

I'm in my 2nd day of a brain fart that...like the air they pump in you to do abdominal surgery...is taking its sweet time to resolve itself.

So please help me with what I should remember: what is the name of the scientific society that was founded by Latinx and Indigenous scientists but is open to others? I like the work they do and if I can't remember the acronym, I can't even find them in my bookmarks. #Geezer

EDIT: I kept almost getting it, almost getting it. https://www.sacnas.org/

I give this example just to show that while we're fighting fascist dictates, them cutting off $ doesn't have to cut off all the inclusion.

Listen to marginalized folks you work with when they tell you what they'd find helpful/welcoming. There are things you can do that the funding spigot being turned tight still cannot touch.

Not everything about being inclusive can be cut off by holding up a grant. Here's an example:

As an older disabled student, there was a shitload of bureaucracy in my way over & above what the avg student dealt with. So when it turned out to be hard to get keys to the buildings I needed to be in, being told it was "easy" was not helpful. What would have been an inclusive, welcoming gesture would have been for the people it's easy for to get the keys issued & present them in an orientation folder

"New archaeological evidence from Iron Age Britain has shaken up long-held beliefs about the role of women in ancient civilisations. By studying the genes of the Durotriges tribe, who lived in Dorset 2000 years ago, researchers have discovered women were the centrepiece of Celtic society - supporting evidence that they had high status across Europe. Rachel Pope, Reader in European Prehistory at the University of Liverpool, explores the “jaw-dropping” findings. "

It's well past time USians asked themselves what they're willing to get jostled into doing for a paycheck.

Where are you drawing the line, ethically? Will you do something just because someone asked or ordered you to do it, or will you resist? How much resistance will you put up?

All questions you should think through NOW if you haven't thought about them before.

(Valid for other nationals as well, but...)
