Working on a health surveillance project for school, which includes an ongoing data analysis plan for a digital dashboard (written a few weeks ago). Dengue is a nationally notifiable disease, and I don't even know what to say about using surveillance data from the CDC.

Meanwhile, this paper is due tonight, and I have been frustrated trying to figure out what to put on this dashboard. I'd love to have a list of the most recent cases reported by the local health districts, but "the year of 2024" isn't really "recent."
Sigh.
I'm not really asking for ideas right now, since I'll dig about some more in the data to see what I can find. But GAH!!!

Meanwhile, I found that the dengue case counts published by the Virginia Department of Health are larger than the case counts the CDC has in the national notifiable disease data for Virginia. But the VDH website only has yearly numbers while the CDC numbers are weekly.

It's been a frustrating week for my health informatics project. I have to create a dashboard and write a paper about it. The previous paper was a research question to guide this, and I proposed looking at mosquito counts and dengue infections. Unfortunately, I just didn't find good data for both in the same locality for the same time period and for free.
So I thought I'd pivot to weather - maybe temperature and precipitation. But hoo boy, are weather datasets big and complicated! ...

In our family slack, we have a channel called #positivity-and-beauty, and when we come across memes that are encouraging or inspiring, we put them there. It's really nice when one of us is feeling bleh.
We also have a channel called #weird-furry-stuff, which is for cute or funny animal pics. And #pen-pr0n for fountain pen stuff.
All of which to say, I need to be careful when I'm screen-sharing at work. And you're a perfect and beautiful human who kicks ass. Go you!!

I love that the administrative simplification for HIPAA is 115 pages long.
Also: if you work in health and spell HIPAA with two Ps, I am judging you. Same if you are in infosec and include misspelled-HIPAA on your resume. If you're not in health you get a pass, but yeesh people, get that sh-t right!

One day I want to hear the John 1 gospel using slightly different language: In the beginning was the Song. And the Song was with God, and the Song was God.

The youth choir singing "Celebrate the Wonder" -- with claps and cheers -- was spirited, energetic, and joyful.
By contrast, the a capella sextet singing Hark the Herald Angels Sing is subdued and sweetly beautiful. The harmonies are crisp and delicious, and I could listen to this group all night.
And they got that sublime moment of silence between the final chord fading away and the congregation's reaction. Simply stunning.

Worship has started! O Come All Ye Faithful on the big ol' cathedral organ, plus jazz band, piano, drum set, gospel choirs, and a fully packed house - the sound is big and amazing enough watching the stream on our TV, so it must be truly transcendent in person.

Ooo! The prelude has started for the Washington National Cathedral's annual Gospel Christmas worship service. If you've never seen it before--or even if you have--get to the stream and watch it: https://cathedral.org/calendar/gospel-christmas-service-2/. This is always an amazing experience, and a highlight of the holiday season here.

Interesting. The yearly Messiah at the Washington National Cathedral has a couple of key personnel changes. And their chosen tempos are rather painfully slow.
