AFRO-CARIBBEAN HISTORY

Dra. Andrea Evangelina Rodríguez, the first female physician in the Dominican Republic.

She dedicated her career to providing medical services to poor communities in the south of the DR. These included sex education in schools and pre- and post-natal OB/GYN services. Through her activism, she highlighted societal issues re race, gender, and class, and protested against the human rights crimes committed under Dictator Rafael Trujillo’s regime.

🎶Do you know what it means to have a revolution

And what it takes to make a solution?

Fighting against oppression, ooh-yeah

Battling down depression

...

Are you ready to stand up and fight the right revolution?

Are you ready to stand up and fight it just like soldiers?

Many are called, few are chosen

Many are called, few are chosen🎶

Happy Reggae Month and Blessed Earthstrong to the Crown Prince of Reggae, Dennis Emmanuel Brown CD, who was born on February 1, 1957. We still miss you.

His flourishing career began at age 12 or 13 when he recorded his first hit “No Man Is an Island” for Jamaican record producer Clement Seymour “Coxsone” Dodd.

Right on time for Reggae Month, which is celebrated in Jamaica every February, is “New Reggae documentary premiering at Bronx Music Hall this weekend”, an article by @MiletteMillington.

“The film is about all of the people behind the scenes who created the phenomenon of reggae music, ... and I hope that hearing their stories inspires someone to pick up an instrument and create something the world has never heard before!”

I enjoyed learning about the featured Thai cultural dishes in The Loyal Pin, so of course, I was delighted that a scene in the second episode of Us highlighted Bua Loy and Khanom Jeen, which are new to me. Dokrak ordered khanom jeen, which had chicken feet in it. I squealed internally because I LOVE chicken foot soup, which is a Jamaican dish.

The illustrations in Us are so cute. I learned that “Bonnie” Pattraphus Borattasuwan, who plays Dokrak, drew some of the featured artwork.

here, then, is the crux of it

this wave of guava

that embraces me in the backyard

this melody of sugar cane

that makes me shut my eyes

this mellow coolness

of the avocado on my tongue

this terrible delight

of salt water about shoulders

here is the crux of it

the joy i feel atop this hill

watching the sea tickle reef

this giddiness that comes

with the coconut water spilling

If you watched Get Millie Black and were curious about why Gershwyn Eustache Jnr’s character, Curtis, and Jomo Tafari Dixon’s character, Daniel, had to hide their relationship, the research in this podcast episode provides a historical background of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

Trinidad and Tobago removes Columbus’ ships from its Coat of Arms. 🇹🇹 🙌🏾

“The law will see Columbus’ three ships—Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria—replaced on the Coat of Arms with Trinidad and Tobago’s national instrument, the Steelpan... Designer and jeweller Gillian Bishop will design the new Coat of Arms for the twin-island nation.”

Hopefully, the demolition of the Columbus statue in Port of Spain is next on the agenda.

Some of Haiti’s stunning beaches.

The joy these images stir in me sits uncomfortably beside the reminder that we Jamaicans have been losing public access to our country’s beaches.
