Today was the end of the line. For 25 years I've had at least one #Linux machine operating in my office. Usually, it was so that I could run something that had no #Windows analog or to be able to continue to use a piece of hardware that Microsoft didn't want to support anymore. I also liked to keep connected to Linux for work reasons. Not anymore.

For the past 10 years, at the very least, there has been a Linux laptop sitting on my desk as a secondary machine. Today, that machine was retired and replaced with a Windows laptop. After the last two Ubuntu updates went a little bit wrong and then terribly, terribly wrong, it became apparent that Linux was no more stable, perhaps even less stable, than Windows. Unlike its competitors, Linux still can't run essential applications such as Microsoft Office 365 and had fallen behind Windows in its GUI interface. To be blunt, Linux has devolved to a server OS, and the desktop experience is no longer on par, let alone superior, to Windows. Sure, Linux still runs on machines with lesser hardware, but I don't have lesser hardware.

So, for the first time in 25 years, I don't need Linux, and it provides no additional value to me over what ships with a PC. Linux just hasn't kept up. Bye bye penguin. It's been great but it's time to move on.
