Puberty blockers and treatments for trans youth under review

Federal Health Minister, Mark Butler, has stepped into the fray after the RWNJ state Health Minister for Queensland made an absolutely boneheaded decision earlier this week. The state government of Queensland is putting thousands of children's lives at risk by pausing the prescription of gender transition drugs, including puberty blockers, for young people at a time in their life when this medical care is essential and potentially life-saving.

I think it's fair to say that Queensland is attempting a "Thin end of the wedge" series of changes — changes that could be made progressively worse in scope and become permanent — which would have disastrous consequences for the wellbeing of trans people in Queensland.

The article notes that the Cass Review in the UK was not based on well-established science or healthcare, and was widely criticised by health experts and, as you'd expect, people with lived experience of being Trans. We should not let those mistakes in the UK be repeated here in Australia.

I'm hoping that the federal health minister does not cave to RWNJs in Queensland or noisy transphobes in the right-wing media. This is an opportunity for the federal government to shore-up support for trans people, and establish federal laws that supersede regressive decisions in some states.

We should not stand for Peter Dutton to use transphobia as a weapon, a political football, or a disingenuous "just asking questions" topic for debate in the upcoming federal election.

Tipping taking off in Australia despite cost-of-living crisis

That's the headline.

I'm not going to link to the article because it's garbage planted there by "research" from a company that makes money from taking a percentage from EFTPOS transactions. The "journalist" who wrote the article did no research to verify the claims. Heck, it could be a paid ad, but there's no acknowledgement of this conflict of interest.

As the meme says, "Stop trying to make fetch happen". Stop trying to make Australian customers do more tipping.

Australia does not have a tipping culture, and America only does it due to entrenched racism and power disparities between workers, bosses, and customers.

Firefighters have succeeded in containing the bushfires in the Grampians region. They worked tirelessly for the last three weeks and today's rain would have been a welcome relief. The bushfire covered 76,000 hectares of national park and farmland.

The Grampians/Gariwerd National Park and surrounding region shows you the rugged beauty of Nature. It's an ancient landscape, and experiencing it in person takes your breath away. I'm fortunate to have been there on holidays and hikes several times over years. I'm no expert, but I think that experience can give you some insights about why it's such an important and sacred place to local Indigenous people, and why it's been home to the Djab Wurrung and Jardwardjali people for more than 20,000 years.

A sickness has taken hold of the Victorian Liberal Party. They've had ample time and attempts to find their way out of this mess of transphobia and white supremacy. Today's LibSpill makes it clear that any attempts to fix the problem were made by a minority in the party. Today, the majority voted to amplify the voices of TERFs and nazis.

This is the heart of the issue the Victorian Liberal Party party-room voted on today. They eagerly dived down that slippery slope to extremism. To them, it's the politically expedient path to power. They voted to normalise hate.

What's the role of politicians and leadership in a Representative Democracy? Some say it's the job of politicians to listen to and interpret the will of the people, then act as their voice in Parliament. Another view is that politicians are leaders and ideal thinkers, elected in recognition of their wisdom, and in the hope that they possess the insight to do what's morally best for the wellbeing of the people.

If you think what I said there is a massive simplification, you'd be right: real life is a lot more complicated. Regardless of which school of thought you follow — that politicians are a mere conduit to recite the voice of the plebs, or that politicians are great men who are born to rule with inscrutable paternalism — the Liberal Party of Victoria have lost sight of the party's very reason for existence.

Are they doing their job of representing the will of the people in their electorates? If they are, that says something absolutely sickening about Victorians. Or, are they trying to shepherd the citizens of Victoria by shifting the Overton Window to a new right-wing extreme?

When it's time to vote in the next state election, remember today, and remember this quote from Maya Angelou:

"When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time."
