Playing Helldivers 2 is really good for me, both in indulging my urge towards performing in front of other people β€” this is a little like pair programming for me β€” and in helping me relearn the enjoyment of getting better at a thing while constantly being terrible at it

I'd lost that long ago, having instead believed I had to be good at things before doing them around other people, which isn't really a good strategy for life

Fucking damnit it was suffering removing the old Aeron seat with the threaded inserts that wouldn't stay in the seat. And the documented procedure wasn't enough

The inserts are Zamak something like that but once I got the seat free I had to clamp a big vice-grips on hard and tap the Allen wrench with a hammer -- I should buy an impact driver I think

At least I didn't over-tighten the bolts into the new seat AND I put antisieze compound on them

The misogyny in the news lately has me even more spitefully motivated in the ways I have always been. If someone says women should not do something, like build big fucking arm muscles, I want to do it more

I was recently reminded of the design of Abby in The Last of Us 2, which I still haven't played, but it has me thinking that every video game should let me play as a ... woman who's a little more buff than I am IRL

Just thinking about that character has me thinking about lifting weights and eating excesses of protein

One of the few good side effects of the pandemic for me is that I finally bought a used Aeron chair for home, and I later bought another when work and computer desks became something in different rooms of the house. The Aeron size C fits me more comfortably than anything else I've ever used sitting at a desk. The Aeron isn't for everybody, but if you sit a lot, you deserve a good, comfortable chair, whatever that is for you

But now the seat fabric on one is failing enough that I need to finally install the replacement seat pan I'd ordered a couple years ago

I sort of dreaded this because I think the threaded inserts on the "hip joint" broke free, but it appears that their instructions account for this because some older units exhibit that problem

I wish ESRB ratings were useful for actually knowing whether a game will give me nightmares

Helldivers 2 does not

Metro Exodus does

I specifically have trauma around hoarding and want to ideally have a lot less physical things than I have

I will say, it is a privilege to be so skilled at computers and able to make more choices about how I engage with them than some others are able to

I think a thing which has also been hard for me about retrocomputing is that, while I do enjoy playing an old game, or the aesthetics about the experience, much of what I use computers for is to have an efficient tool for communicating in the present world. A formative part of my becoming seriously interested in computers was in realizing I could use them to connect to other computers and read things written by other people, without the intermediary of traditional publishing. Arguably, it is because of this that I am alive and living happily as the person I am today

Additionally I loved getting access to distributed systems that exhibited complex behaviors. I remember the first time I ran tcpdump on my dorm ethernet in college

So a lot of how I approach computers is to reduce the invasiveness of current-day computers. Ad-blockers, lots of deliberate choices of how I configure things, etc. But I absolutely desire a tool that is efficient to use to communicate with the largest number of people, and also a tool that is effective in inspecting technology as it exists in the present. If I get curious about how some software works, I want to take it apart

I'm feeling a particular nostalgia tonight for font rendering on 1 bit-per-pixel, high resolution, white-phosphor CRT displays. Like a Sun 3/50 (19" 1152x900 which was 1/4 of the RAM of the machine!)

I've this theory about people being into retrocomputing, and at least why I used to be drawn towards it. If you're someone who loves computers, it feels nice to give our inner children the cozy experiences they deserved. I'm hesitant though, because in the past this turned into a unhealthy collecting/hoarding hobby for me, instead of a creative one

I was having one of those experiences of slightly differing attitudes, and after a bit I remembered, oh, yeah, I'm basically a leatherdyke

But then I was examining some things about my life from decades ago, and I realized... It probably wasn't going to turn out any other way πŸ₯°

The war on porn is so weird, because accessing porn doesn't compare to the actual harms perpetuated with great frequency by adults who abuse children and disrespect children's boundaries
