Yes. Surveillance and tracking by default is definitely a problem. Mastodon is designed the way it is so that you will not, in general, have access to those conversations unless they're in your actually existing social network. If people wanted to converse with you, presumably you have an email address. If they aren't making an effort to reach out in this way, then assume they do not want to.

Google was caught lying[1] about the terms of service imposed on the Israeli government and their use of Google cloud services, which include tools capable of facial detection, image classification, sentiment analysis, and object tracking [2]. Given the sensitivity of this contract, the specific scope and use of these tools hasn't been confirmed, but have been used by other law enforcement agencies in this scope [2].

Australia just banned #socialmedia for people under the age of 16.

While I might agree in principle (particularly regarding social media that relies on ad-supported force-fed slop), this raises pretty profound implications for the #fediverse.
