▪️I do these home automations in Shortcuts, not Home, bc they’re not simple on/off toggles, and there’s a sequence in some that change at different times of day.
▪️ I set up a few others with renames, including Pursuit Mode and Cinema Mode shortcuts that “engage” and “disengage” my driving focus and living room lighting modes, respectively.
▪️ I also updated my bath light shortcut with a notification to show visual confirmation of the light configuration. There are four lights.

In part 2, I put the new Rename Shortcut action in iOS/iPadOS 18 to use by updating my toggle shortcuts. I have a stack of Shortcut widgets on my Home Screens and Today Views to turn on/off various scenes in my home. Until last night, they were just labeled “toggle.” Now they change names (and Siri commands) when toggled. I keep one bathroom light on overnight at 1%. My widget for that now changes name from “Dim Bath Lights” to “Bath Lights to Full” and vice versa.

In today’s episode of “I can build a shortcut for that,” I have a two-parter. First, I built a shortcut to add status updates to a shared note that my wife can access on her business trip. Most of the updates are cat based and occur when she’s working or sleeping, so started a log that she can check at her leisure. Started with just the cats in/out report and expanded from there while she was in-flight. She arrived safely to a slew of updates.

Figaro was none too pleased when we cleared off the deck this week ahead of the winter “storm”, or when we kept him in overnight for the first time, but he finally got on board when we let him out into the snow in the morning. He went galloping off, presumably did his business, and returned within the hour, eyes wide open, desperate to come in from the cold, confirming he’s not a snow cat.

With Homer’s passing and Figaro’s introduction, Harley’s role in the cat dynamic is in complete turmoil. He used to follow Homer around like a sidekick. Now he follows Figaro like a stalker. He can’t do anything about the larger and younger Fig, so he’s gotten more aggressive with Pip, agitating both of them.

After spending two nights away to get fixed and isolated, Figaro is back like it never happened. He spent his first day back out touching grass then came back for dinner. Now he’s back to living on the deck and coming in for meals and the occasional nap, so all is well with Figs.

Figaro has started spending more time indoors much to Pip’s consternation. We’d been keeping them separated by closing the door when Pip napped on our bed, but Pip doesn’t like being stuck, so he’s made this spot on the couch his go-to. Why this spot? Because it’s my spot. If I’m sitting there when he comes down, he cannot settle, jumping from that donut cave in the background to the spot next to me. Once he gets it, he naps for hours.

Figaro isn’t moved in full-time yet, but he is getting quite comfortable indoors. We got him to the vet last week for his first round of shots, and it didn’t scare him off. Big challenge will be his second round next week combined with getting snipped and an overnight stay at the clinic.

Sharing Thanksgiving photos from the #CatsOfSumocat. We spent the early evening with my wife’s family then returned home to feed the cats. Figaro and Harley (standing behind Figs), having learned to co-exist on the deck, dined together in the kitchen. Pip, who prefers to eat outside and is still not comfortable around Figs, braved the cold to eat out front.

Well, I wish I could say I was anything but disappointed this morning, but honestly, I would only have been surprised by a Harris win. Her main obstacle was the misogyny ingrained in our society, followed by racism, then Trump. She campaigned hard against the third, while his campaign rode hard on the first two, and it worked. Again. Disappointing. Not surprising.

Our boy Pip has trapped himself indoors the past few weeks, his life disrupted by Homer’s passing and Figaro’s arrival. His favorite spot has been in my chair, which he can’t use when I need it, so he’s agreed to lie on this cushion on the floor next to me. It’s normally an outdoor cushion, so he gets the same feel and morning sunshine indoors as being outside. Fortunately, we’re creeping ever closer to harmony as Pip learns Figs is not a threat.

Figaro has taken the next step in adopting us by napping on the deck daily, much to the consternation of Harley and Pip. Harley has started to approach him with more curiosity than hostility. Pip, on the other hand, is taking his naps indoors and his adventuring to the front of the house.
