This website asks what happened in 1971, showing a lot of graphs:

https://wtfhappenedin1971.com/

The answer is: Rich people started treating other people as things and focused only on money.

In terms of growth of knowledge of the human race, #ESO's #GAIA is the most significant scientific project ever:

My deepest respect to everybody involved, but in particular to astronomer Erik Høg, who set this ball rolling many years ago with a photomultiplier and a GIER computer in Hamburg.

Does anybody know of a FOSS tool that can recursively wander over a website and report dead links and other problems ?

Not that 'wget -m' wouldn't be able to do it, but there must be something more specialized out there, no ?

It seems to me that most people totally overestimate the orange shitgibbons abilities at 3D-chess.

All the talk about Greenland is really this trivial piece of math:

9.8 + 2.1 > 9.9

If USA annexes Greenland it becomes larger than Canada.

And the blathering about annexing Canada ?

9.8 + 9.9 > 17.1

That would make USA bigger than Russia and also "The Greatest Country On Earth"

That's all there is to it.

I'm sure Putler has teased Trumpolini about being president of a small country...

Your periodic reminder that #microsoft is not a competent or serious company:

(@bagder is remarkably restrained in the quoted responses. I would have gone off the rails, but do not need to, because we decided on day one that #varnishcache would not run on Windows).

If you think that is not bad enough, read the Cyber Safety Review Board's report about the Microsoft Exchange clowncar:

Somebody should implement the T800 #transputer on a #RaspberryPi #rp2040.

Those DMA state engines are more than capable of implementing the transputer serial links...

Yesterday I added this to the "FreeBSD.hints" file for fortune to use:

»When netstat reports every 8 seconds, it tells traffic in bits per second:

$ netstat -I bge0 8«

Today: Bikeshed 🙂

I should have known better...

Why have I never seen a single article anywhere about the "Absolute Persistence" spyware company, who claims to have their spyware installed on more than half a billion computers ?

It's half past 11pm, do you know who controls your computer ?

I guess not ?

And yes, I'm they guy who has been calling for product liability on software for more than a decade, so even though EU didn't adopt my suggestion, I'm cutting notch in my keyboard for winning this one.

I'm amazed that there has been zero coverage of this:

EU's new Product Liability Directive got voted through last thursday.

No later than two years from now, software, stand-alone, cloud or embedded are subject to "no-fault liability" (ie: doesn't matter how or why, only that it is defective.)

Here's the directive:

https://data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document/PE-7-2024-INIT/en/pdf

Gentlemen, start your panic…

PS: Yes, there is a FOSS exemption, but only "outside commercial activity". (Ie: The guy in Nebraska but not RedHat)

So now that X86 is (finally!) facing real competition they suddenly want the users input ?

Maybe if they had talked to users before, the competition would not be so stiff now ?

Kudos to all involved: This is seriously amazing.

@mattblaze @SteveBellovin

Personally I expect all three of us will hate EU's "solution" when it lands.

But that's what we get, when people who might come up with something better either refuse "to dirty themselves with politics", or think that if they solve the problem for FBI in USA, that'll work just as well in the rest of the world.

But yeah, I get it, you "solved" the problem already, and now you're "bored"...
