Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is playing at Hill Auditorium tonight and I’m not there because I neglected to get tickets and it’s been completely sold out for months #lolsob

However

It used to be an annual tradition for J@LCO band members to drift in to the local jazz club — Bird of Paradise — after midnight and step up and play with the locals

So I’m at Blue Llama for the late set with my fingers crossed

so, ok, 25 years ago (maybe i can stop obsessing about it if i talk about it) i was sitting next to the prof who was my principal undergrad mentor (like, 25 years prior) & he, intending to show me some positive vibes, kind of patted me on top of my (bald) head.

it was kind of warm in there & it was beyond damp up there, positively slick

he pulled his moistened hand away & we kind of stared in one another’s eyes wordlessly for a moment

the sumo wrestling match is on the same night #alas as the annual departmental dinner-dance which i shun bc they hand out awards every year but not to me which makes me jealous and resentful (hello! i am the petty child i appear to be! ha ha) also i swore i would not attend again after an extreme cringe moment (that i don’t want to talk about, but that i still dwell on) the last time i attended (25 years ago) unless they were giving ME an award.

amazingly, lynn got us booked into the hotel on art island for a couple nights.

i want to get near mt. fuji. i’ll mention this to @peaceloveom, chief travel planner.

also i want to spend some time in far away places where american tourists don’t belong. i’ll be quiet and respectful, promise.

looks like we might miss out on the sumo wrestling match in osaka that we already paid for and that was one of the raison d’etres of the whole trip :-( well there’s always next time

ugh i need to do a thing with a borrowed DSLR which means i have to figure it out but i’m not matt blaze which means i have to go to the camera store and ask for help and there’s no way i’m gonna do that

oh i have an idea — i will (half-heartedly) try to figure it out on my own, post a (half-baked) solution, and matt blaze will come to my rescue
