@pluralistic 's useful protip for the Department of Government Efficiency (DoGE): "It's pretty easy to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget, actually" and shows them what to cut: https://pluralistic.net/2025/01/27/beltway-bandits/#henhouse-foxes

That's so much better than realizing memeCoin is being used to launder money for the Oligarchy.

@pluralistic, re "Picks and Shovels" I don't understand: Marty just told the Reverend Sirs he wouldn't take 25% because he could do his job perfectly, they botch the acquisition, and Marty'd get nothing. Then he just takes the counter-offer of the lesser of his hourly rate or 25%. That's not better, that's far worse. Was the point that Marty was bluffing and the Bishop saw through him? Or just how bad Marty was at negotiating back in his youth?

Absolutely epic rant from @pluralistic , reminding us of the value of Chesterton’s fence: Refrain from tearing something down until you know why it was built in the first place. (Eg., vaccines, cryptography without backdoors, protections in Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder) Read, enjoy, learn. https://pluralistic.net/2025/01/13/wanting-it-badly/#is-not-enough

Good to see the response to Ann Telnaes's quitting the Washington Post because they wouldn't publish her cartoon. Click through for nice tributes. https://anntelnaes.substack.com/p/with-gratitude #cartoon

Pleasantly surprised that ghostty distinguishes C-i from tab right out of the box. (I use tab/Shift-tab to switch buffers in vim, but Ctrl-i/o to jump.) #ghostty

Martial Solal and Johnny Griffin "What is this thing Called Love". A wonderful 4m jazz piano/drums/bass piece. Give it a listen while you're reading your feed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JSEYFr9bVM #music #jazz

First step in prepping my possible migration from Chrome to Firefox in June is to retrain myself to use @ as the first character in all my site-search prefixes while still in Chrome.

Then in Firefox go to about:config page and set browser.urlbar.update2.engineAliasRefresh flag to “true”, to add all my site searches.

Ex, @rt goes to: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/search?search=%s

My favorite thing from 2024? The US Government switching from "we require a backdoor to all encrypted communications, you can trust us, no other state actor is nearly as sophisticated, nothing will go wrong" to "stop texting, use end-to-end encryption, like now". Glad we've settled that one for once and all. https://www.npr.org/2024/12/17/nx-s1-5223490/text-messaging-security-fbi-chinese-hackers-security-encryption #encryption #security #2024

It makes me happy to see https://www.kitchenknifeforums.com/ active from 2011 to today. It's what I thought the web was going to be in the first place. Just people supporting each other, in something they love. #web

Got a calendar notification to cancel "Financial Shield" because the Morgan Stanley settlement's membership is expiring. Went there, and apparently there've been so many other breaches my complimentary plan got extended to 2033. So setting another reminder. #security-breach-life

Two worthy links on Immigration: First, one of the most important The Daily podcasts of the year. "On the Ballot: An Immigration System Most Americans Never Wanted" It's a fair and revealing look at how we got here. Pro immigrant isn't necessarily pro immigration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgDdTV7A57w 1/2
