Yes, I know I need to learn jq.

It's just that I learned ed* 40 years ago and everything through vim has been incremental. Not sure I can actually learn something entirely new...

I am so tired of everything returning JSON.

Especially when the "human-readable" output is "key: value\n" and hence is parseable by key, AND THE STUPID TOOL WON'T SEND THAT TO ANYTHING THAT'S NOT A TTY!

If you're not serializing a complex data structure, JSON is just so much garbage interfering with the data. There is a REASON that the standard POSIX text tools default to tab-delimited values in LF-

delimited records. It is a widely useful easily-parsed format.

I know that it is technically wrong*, but I've always liked the idea that humans can see just about a full "octave” of wavelengths, so purple (red end) and violet (blue end) are harmonic like a pair of adjacent C notes and hence look similar to our eyes.

So I finally installed #Ollama and loaded up #DeepSeek to run locally.

Its censorship is extremely light-touch. My first prompt asked what world leader resembles Winnie the Pooh.

习近平 is mentioned only in passing.

What's interesting to me about #Deepseek is that it appears to support the idea that the obscenely hungry (American) models are that way because they have been built by people who thought that they might be building a god with unlimited omniscience, while spinning tales of saving humanity.

Meanwhile, by aiming much lower w/o megalomania, Deepseek seems to have built something almost as good for far less effort. Whether it is any more useful than other pseudo-#AI remains to be seen

The first hard drives I encountered were four 5MB drives, each housed in cases roughly the size of a full-size "AT” case laid flat. Connected to a TRS-80 Model 4 running Xenix. https://mastodon.social/@whitequark/113893554127917309

Yes, if you’re going to be at a protest, you should not bring your iPhone or iPad. Buy a burner for cash and turn it off unless it’s absolutely essential.

And Air Drop is for the privacy of your own home. Turn it off unless and until you need it. https://digipres.club/@ryanfb/113873758527819726

That would knock me off of any list. I use purpose-unique addresses so having any of them exposed in a breach is rare and pretty easily handled. Anytime I subscribe to anything, the address has just been invented. https://hachyderm.io/@paulnewman/113817272708230722

Yeah, Markwayne kinda needs to view professional qualifications as trivial…

And of course, not all Senators would be qualified to be SecDef.

If Hegseth is confirmed, he will either flame out fast or succeed in his mission of decapitating and hollowing out the US military. https://fed.brid.gy/r/https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:bbp2b224lro3bfnzcqwwnkfo/post/3lfpsahk7q22y

I am a Gladwellian "expert" on #Apple's #TimeMachine backup subsystem for #macOS, in that I've easily put in 10k hours trying to make it work...

I have no idea why it spends more time stat'ing and reading a bit from every single extent file in the not-yet-mounted "sparsebundle" than it does actually backing up to it over the net, but at least it is not taking over an hour any more.

We have a working kitchen sink for the first time in over a month. There's still just temporary subfloor in a ~8'x12' section, some overhung by cabinetless contertop, the dishwasher and range are still pulled out onto the definitely solid part of the floor, and there's still air drying/cleaning gear running but we no longer need to navigate the plastic wall to get water & we finally have the faucet with a filter on it working again so we don't need to buy drinking water.

Strange to characterize "AI" generating vulnerability reports by making shit up as "democratizing."

I guess it does democratize the rare skill of writing bug reports that demand attention but in fact amount to nothing. That is not a good thing. https://ioc.exchange/@percepticon/113787841720345448

There is absolutely no such thing as "8-bit Mac apps."

The 68000 is a 16-bit external-bus processor that works in 32-bit idiom and has a 24-bit address space.

And of course there are Sir, Madam, Brother, Sister, etc. In English, all I can think of are gendered. "My fellow Earthling" seems a tad pretentious.

I used "Girl" to my then-tween daughter ~20ya and she visibly cringed, insisted that "Dude" was all I was allowed, and that "Dude" was universal. So, that's one vote.

It has occurred to me that we have no genderless equivalent to the words "Dude" or "Man" and "Girl" or "Girlfriend" used as a form of prefatory address e.g. "Dude, seriously? and "Girlfriend, let me tell you." and sometimes used all alone with an implied vibe.

"Entity" would be inclusive, I guess. I hate it. So the right neutral/neuter/agender/inclusive term (the "they" analog) should be:

That's terrifying.

I've never deployed a new machine of any sort that has a password without changing it. Hell, I even change the boot disk name on Macs so that there isn't a "MacintoshHD" for malware to anchor on.

I'm really surprised that in a world where the news has daily stories about breaches and long-lived botnets, 6 of 7 people just buy a device, do the minimal setup work to make it functional, and never bother changing even the password.

Github promotes software development as a form of competitive performance: a game. It is not accidental that so many people who write #FOSS code using Github also do Twitch streaming.

All games attract people who like to compete. Some people who like to compete have no ethical framework ruling out any tactics, because they believe that the game is the thing and so winning is what matters. https://infosec.exchange/@0xabad1dea/113764461796361606

The right choice would be to make a H1-B visa less like indentured labor. Make it easier for them to switch jobs and give them a green card automatically after a few years if they want one. Empower the labor rather than abolish it. https://hachyderm.io/@skinnylatte/113748440531728628
