“In a political culture dominated by social media rather than by legislative and legal process, the giving of an impression…is actually more potent and more instantly deliverable than the kind of careful policymaking that governments like Keir Starmer’s prefer. #Trump may not deliver much materially for the millions who voted for him, but his ability to persuade them that he is doing so shines an unsettling light into the politics of the future.” #genocide #Gaza

Should #OnlyFans be blocking access to users under 21 years old just “in case" its "government-approved” age verification technology (from #Yoti) is wrong by three years (ie an approved user is actually under 18), “to protect children from restricted material”? 🤨 https://www.ft.com/content/3a28c19f-6c80-4bff-9711-d8f126912c8b

‘Dubbed a “bazooka” by some EU officials when it came into force in 2023, the Anti-Coercion Instrument allows the bloc to select from a wide range of retaliatory measures, such as revoking the protection of intellectual property rights or their commercial exploitation, for example, software downloads and streaming services.’

“We can customise our supply chain, so for #Iris2 we can make that supply chain use European fabs and European package houses. Believe it or not, people are cautious about having US technology in their products. What you don’t want is the US telling you who you can sell your products to, which they can if you use licensed technology.”

“#Trump’s nationalism is not an aberration — it is the American norm, even if his behaviour can appear abnormal. Our 🇬🇧 defence and security policy, our trade policy, our expenditure must be readied for a new era in which 🇺🇸 is a much more transactional partner that has less regard to our interests and worldview.”

Doesn't #Apple require apps to allow users to at least opt-out of marketing notifications? That includes you, Apple #Music! (No setting for this in the iPad app.) Just disabled them for #Prime Video (not easy to find the settings there either)... 🤨

🇬🇧 science minister: #DeepSeek’s chatbots show that #AI “isn’t going to be dominated by two or three companies. We’re now in a truly competitive era”. Also weakens limited safety legislation commitments

Responding to Musk’s attacks, 🇬🇧 PM Keir Starmer “made the essential difference between the politics of alleviating suffering and the politics of cynically exploiting it. That distinction needs to infuse more of #Labour’s rebuttals. The question of who speaks for Britain should be framed in terms of who is serious about finding solutions and who relishes aggravating the problems.” << Excellent, wide-ranging analysis 👏🏻

@glynmoody I am not going to make any cheap jokes 😳 but honestly, if there was any way to get more than 0.1% of the EU population to know about the #DMA, and perhaps to make alternative app stores mainstream.. this is probably it

“#AltStore claims the approval of the #HotTub app is the first to go through the Notarization process to be approved for distribution on the iPhone. Despite the nature of the content, the company says they didn’t have any issues getting the app approved, though that’s likely because Apple has often used pornography as an example of the kind of app they now must allow under the #DMA.”

Expect more pressure for expanding #LFR across 🇬🇧 >> ‘The businesses in Norwich can sign up to a commercial version of Neighbourhood Watch. If someone is caught stealing from one of the shops in the scheme, they are banned from them all. The department store has live facial recognition technology that sends an instant alert when a prolific offender enters, but the police also rely on more old-fashioned tactics.’

”Many companies, even old-economy enterprises, will not be able function without their 0s and 1s in the right order. A fancy speaker fail, while irritating for the well-heeled, is tolerable. But electric vehicles, power grids and medical devices are becoming not just software-based but software-dependent. #Sonos sets the tone for a new kind of investment risk.”

UK-EU “reset”: ‘Starmer’s inner circle believes one of the simplest areas will be persuading #Europol to share policing objectives and intelligence, the first part of the crime basket. From Britain’s point of view this should lead to better co-ordination on cross-border money laundering and human trafficking gangs. In return, the Europeans are desperate for British intelligence.’ << Will critically depend on 🇬🇧 law enforcement data protection…

The [European Commission] proposal also abolishes a current exemption for goods worth less than €150 from paying duty, making them subject to customs checks.’

Europe’s centre-right parties could be subsumed by the far right within 10 to 15 years, Prof. Abou-Chadi predicted: “It’s already happened in some countries; in others it’s under way. We still talk about them as if they’re fringe. That has to change.”

“The #DMA establishes specific, directly applicable per se rules. The opportunity for individuals to bring claims for breaches of these obligations, even before a decision by the Commission, will help ensure effective enforcement of the regulation and combat the imbalance in the enforcement resources that the Commission has at its disposal versus the resources that the gatekeepers have.” ✅ https://theplatformlaw.blog/2025/01/31/looking-ahead-at-private-enforcement-of-the-dma-and-why-the-db-station-judgment-does-not-hinder-standalone-damages-claims/

The 🇺🇸 “alliance with western Europe is not permanent. It is still an imperial power in the traditional sense, with territorial ambitions. And much of corporate America is happy to have an authoritarian government, as long as it is good for profits… [it] is really a brutally competitive, aggressively nationalistic place – at least for large stretches – rather than the essentially benign society and superpower believed in for so long by so many liberals.” 💯
