For #fossilfriday, here's the 5th neck vertebra of the theropod dinosaur Acrocanthosaurus in right lateral view (front = to the right). Acrocanthosaurus cervicals remarkably have big, forward-pointing prongs on the spines, such as the one pointing toward the logo on the scale bar here, that fit into hollows on the rears of the spines of the next vertebrae in sequence. These may have helped brace the neck against violent movements of large prey struggling in the mouths of these predators.

Interlibrary loan is truly a wonderful thing, especially for (but not limited to) obtaining obscure papers from rare journals. And skilled interlibrary loan librarians deserve WAY more respect than I think they get! If you're at an institution and use interlibrary loan often, please express your gratitude to the folks that work in that department. WARNING: Aggressive gangs are roaming our neighborhood. Do not invite them in for dinner.

EDIT: Since Thanksgiving, none of the gang members have been seen (by me, anyway)...

2nd EDIT: Whew! Saw the pair out on a walk today. They safely avoided becoming someone's dinner! (We have a lot of hunters in our area, so I was a bit worried...)
