Some of the discourse around the North American Trade War reeks of respectability politics.
Portraying Canada as less deserving of tariffs or implying Mexico is more deserving of them only serves to divide the impacted populations even more, which is undoubtedly a goal of the current administration in DC.
All North Americans will suffer because of these actions, including US citizens.

I listened to Jimi Hendrix’s Star-Spangled Banner a few times during my overnight flight. It's very powerful and feels very relevant to this moment.

Growing up, all my Mexican passports not only had my name, date of birth and issued date, but also my height, weight, eye color, and skin color.
Some information does not need to be included in a passport.

I've been critical of the trade relationship Mexico has had with the US for decades. I think few Mexicans have benefitted fairly from the various trade deals and working conditions and the environment have suffered, with inequality growing. A trade war will not address these issues though and it will probably aggravate many of them.

The US is shutting down its international trade. More than 40% of all goods coming into the country come from Mexico, China and Canada. It's pretty clear that the current administration is heading towards an isolationist policy.

I've been moderating a large Native American forum for almost 17 years ago and it's never been this bad. So many trolls, so much propaganda, so much disinformation. Banning people and/or bots left and right.

Having been raised in Mexico, Canada and the US, right now feels a bit like your parents announcing they're getting divorced. Sad times.

Trump administration has announced plans to cancel the student visas of pro-Palestinian protesters.
Sad, but unsurprising. "Cancel culture" is in the eye of the beholder and painting foreign students that are lawfully exercising their free speech rights as "terrorists" is a convient way of eliminating dissent. Free speech for some, but not all.

Native peoples in North America have been disposed of their land and autonomy for hundreds of years and I guess the 2020s are not going to be much different.

I do not think people realize that 89% of Greenlanders are Inuit. Self-rule means Greenlandic Inuit might have the most national sovereignty of any other Native North American peoples. The fact that this is being threatened is unconscionable.

Well, this sucks. I am sure my corporate landlord will seek to make a sweetheart agreement with Comcast (who has monthly invitations to "greet" residents) and force all tenants on their services.

And if you're in the Bay, check out the first-come, first-served Junction campground at Mount Diablo State Park. I had it all to myself for three days. When the park was closed, I was maybe the most isolated person in the Bay. Worthwhile experience

I spent half of the last month camping up and down California. A couple of long weekends and full ten days over Christmas. It is very centering to be in nature. Despite all the messed up, horrible things going on, witnessing the world continue is empowering and encouraging. I highly recommend it. Even a few hours can be supremely beneficial.

So Le Courrier did not publish my letter, but only because they decided to write an entire article on the #Proton issue! They're interviewing me for it tomorrow morning. Hope they can shine a light on this polemic, which is looking worse and worse, given the Nazi salutes by Musk.

I wonder how this new birthright order will interact with the Indian Citizenship Act. Are Indigenous people in reservations and rancherías no longer under the jurisdiction of the USA then? Can they lease land to China's PLA then?

I fear that the time to lawyer-up has arrived. My uninsured motorist claim has been stuck in limbo since my hit-and-run collision back in June 2024. Despite providing all required documents (medical records, wage info, etc.), the insurance keeps delaying and demanding unnecessary forms. They haven't even responded to my demand letter from August 2024.
I'm considering filing a complaint with the CA Dept. of Insurance, but I also want to explore legal options. Does anyone know a good insurance lawyer in California who handles bad faith claim delays? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

The #fedi has solved social media. It might not be perfect, but it works well enough. No ads, no tracking, no "national security concerns", no corporate overlords. It's just folks chatting away, without any of the overhead.
