I think the better way to play DOOM with a lot of random online players is with respawn monsters enabled, ultra violence and modern team play off.

Problems:

people joining and then complaining. If you don't like, leave, negativity is not needed.

people who think it's in nightmare mode because there are respawns and leaving without trying the mode.

Respawn mode solves the problem of a few players moving ahead and killing the monsters leaving some players to only search for keys. It also gives plenty more ammo and weapons, which solves the problem of people who die being reduced to pistols for too long.

It is bad for exploration, so it works great on the well-known DOOM 1 & 2 levels that everybody knows. It can be harder to pull on the less well-known WADs.

If I could, I would make the monsters a bit slower to respawn, and I wouldn't respawn the bosses.
