Last night my son was up late and I checked in. He asks if I want to see the drawing he did. I had questions. I’m impressed! I did ask if he traced it. Nope. He hand drew it, inverted. My son who school “professionals,” and who know better than parents, said he had small motor issues and that’s why he had trouble writing. Nope! It turns out he loves to write and draw and create. He just couldn’t learn it FROM YOU.

🧵 5/? Unless I learn something surprising, it might be the adults who could benefit from taking some of the kids’ example!
I apologize for such a long thread. It’s rare that we get a chance to understand what at first seems to be a negative situation turns out to be a shining example of the good our kids can do for each other when they’re empowered!

🧵 4/? What I do know is that when I reached out to the peer’s parents to ask if he was feeling better, and that I’d had negative feedback about my son’s actions in the situation, they responded by asking me to please THANK him for being there for their son and being supportive.
We talk a lot about how we want to encourage empathy, self-advocacy, and perspective taking in our Autistic and ADHD children. But honestly in this situation he seemed to be doing ALL of that.

🧵 2/? No details so far, but I did pose this question for later follow-up. Meantime I talked with my son to try to better understand.
Turns out he wanted to help his friend. He saw him get escalated, but he didn’t know what happened. What he SAW was adults grabbing at him, apparently to take away his shoes… with which he was apparently striking himself.
My child’s transgression seems to have been ignoring adults’ demand to leave the scene.

🧵 3/? Instead he stayed and approached his peer from the opposite side of a play structure, where adults had formed a semicircle around the location of the peer.
Eventually my son asked his peer if he needed a hug, and was told that yes he really could use a hug. He did so and apparently this made his friend feel better. I’m sure there’s more lurid detail for the adults to offer. That’ll be in the coming days.

🧵 1/? School sent an email today about an incident. My son refused to leave a situation where another peer (a friend) was escalated and hitting themselves. My son was reprimanded and will have consequences tomorrow at school.
At first I thought he’d been triggered and became escalated himself. But why punish him for that? Was it “unsafe?”

Why, #Signal? Why must you undermine my trust in you by repeatedly insisting on asking for access to my contacts? Why is it not sufficient for me to say no and MEAN no? Take a hint! NO CONTACTS. EVAR!!

My #neurodifference often makes it hard for me to do things like know how I feel, how much energy I have, etc before I learn by hitting a wall, crashing into a nap, or similar. So this experience of recovering from a minor surgery has been perplexing. I’ll feel energetic and wonderful one moment, and then suddenly feel empty and drained and in desperate need of a nap. I’m trying to be mindful but it really isn’t easy!

Love this! I first did recursion in #Apple #Pascal on my #Apple2e way back when. By the time I was in college and doing it in #Scheme (#LISP) it was easy! Recursion in #bash is fun too, and quite natural.

I love you, #flatpak but oh how I loathe how you manage permissions. Thankfully a helpful #LLM turned me on to #flatseal. 💕💕💕
Just being able to VISUALIZE the permissions settings is a massive win.

Experiencing a great example of #ableist behavior. Rubik’s #cubing events are t exactly quiet. But there’s a group of kids so freaking loud I can’t even hear myself in my head. I and teo others ask them to please quiet down. Nope. Totally #oblivious. And #entitled. Why should our noise be bothering anyone?
Gosh I don’t know. But a kid slams their hands down on the table to finally get their attention, and this is the “problem.”

I generally consider myself pretty flexible and resilient. But I am occasionally reminded that I reach my limits when tired or too many frustrations build up. I’m getting better at recognizing it so I don’t get into a meltdown.
That said, I give myself the flexibility to change course and bail out on the situation that got me there. Yes, it confuses whomever is involved, and whether I bother explaining depends on whether they contributed to the issue.

Is it crazy to consider asking for a primary care doctor that’s #neurodivergent? Having to constantly get it up emotionally for allistics is exhausting, and frankly distracts from my actual care. Further, I don’t think they understand that, when I raise concerns about trust and transparency, that being dismissive and not addressing concerns diminishes trust. They just don’t hear me and then wonder why I avoid them.
