I missed this news before over the holidays.

Several UK universities have now dropped out of subscribing to Elsevier's big deal agreements. I'm guessing, but most UK universities will have accepted the 1-year extension til the end of 2025.

Its reasonable to assume that this is mainly because of financial pressures.

Hopefully this is the start of a bigger wave across the UK.

... so now would be a very good time to engage with libraries and request that we do not take the 1 year extension on the Elsevier big deal.

No one University is likely to want to go it alone, but if enough Universities in the UK say 'no thanks' to the one year extension, we might be able to shift the dial.

UK Universities are likely to extend access to Elsevier collection for another year, despite huge deficits of many Universities (including Cambridge).

See what MIT did:

2019 - MIT cancelled big deal and instead subscribed to 675 journals (of

about 2.5K available?)

2020 - they cancelled all Elsevier subscriptions - relying instead on

back-access and interlibrary loans.

Estimated savings: 80% of original spend - saving 2 million USD/year now...
