Working in Jupiter lab on a project, running the code block by block, then print-debugging, changing stuff and rerunning blocks. Is it just me, or notebooks are insanely bad IDEs. How the hell ppl write decent code in this environment? Whatever I do, it ends up an entangled mess. The only way to be sure is to restart the kernel every time I change something

Crazy that my train is on time, despite the ongoing snowfall. Belgian rail can't even fail reliably :) #sncb #belgium

OK, that worked. Hello from #nixos 24.11. I can go back any time. That's the neat thing about it.

OK, I'll calm down and switch to a stable release of #nixos. Unstable is too... unstable (duh). It's too much adaptation to new config changes (and broken packages) each time I try to update. Interesting how that wasn't the case last year.
If I need latest and greatest of something, I'll just override or use a flake. Tweaking configs is fun, but I really want to be able to be at least somewhat productive.

Don't let the Starbucks Holiday Blend fool you. It's actually lumps of charcoal carefully crafted into #coffee beans. Still searching for the "hints of maple and spices", but need to reactivate my taste buds after the onslaught of the essence of bitterness. "Medium" roast, they say...

[#]rstats may not be the the snappiest for this iterative stuff. Anybody got the solution for the 2nd part under a minute?

That was a mean one. Couldn't reuse my part 1 for part 2. But that's probably for the better :D

Does any of you people of Mastodon have a clue why the rat genes are missing from Ensemble Biomart? Rat genome is part of the latest release. Asked the help desk but no response yet.

Damn you Advent of Code! I really really didn't want to do it this year.
But then, I just wanted to see for a change how easy it is to solve it with a language I actually know. Just because R is vectorised, so it should be well suited for this kind of task. I had to do it, you see?
And I did. In a matter of minutes, and each part is a one liner. I'm afraid I might continue. Let's hope I won't have the time for this.

I've just switched from Gogs to Forgejo on my local server. Thanks to #nixos it took me very little time to set it up, as all the configs have the same syntax, and packagers did a great job enabling all the necessary options.
Forgejo looks super mature, and migrating my repos was a breeze. it can even migrate issues, wikis etc. from a number of git hosting solutions, including the less popular ones (like Gogs). So far, the user experience is vastly improved. Happy Sunday!

I'm looking for a FOSS solution for a group forum for friends or neighbours or colleagues. The usual way these days is a Whatsapp group, but I don't want to depend on a commercial service like that. What options are out there? It should have both web and smartphone clients, supports text, image, etc. messages for groups and individuals. Encryption is preferred. Self hosting should be possible, but a default public server would be nice to start with. Should be quite mature and easy to use even for non technical folks. #forums #foss

Today we had a "bored afternoon" with my four year old son. The rest of the family was sleeping, and we played with a broken folding rule. The game somehow got invented, I don't know if it was him or me; perhaps together. It was just five straight sides that you could fold in any shape, and the other one had to guess what it was. Amazing how children can enjoy these creative games <3 Best bonding moment ever. #parenting
