OurAirports is now live on the new server in Europe. No hiccups so far. 🤞 DNS should be updated for everyone by now.

Every week or so I discover a new clue about my recently-acquired guitar. I'm fairly confident now that it's part of a small series of very-rare experimental guitars that José Ramírez IV had produced by hand in his Madrid workshop in the early 1990s, the prototypes for his Especial and Amalia Ramírez's later SP(R) series.

What a find, just hanging from a music-store wall on consignment (and very cheap b/c of the cosmetic damage). It sounds like a $10K guitar.

Related point: if you're on a fediverse instance hosted in the U.S., it might be worth talking to the maintainer and community about moving it.

Whether you're a U.S. citizen or a foreign national, the new, volatile federal administration can demand information to use against you, such the server logs (which tell them roughly where you were and when, e.g. have you crossed a state border to exercise your reproductive rights?).

Progress on the #OurAirports migration out of the U.S.

I have almost everything working now in the new containerised environment on a server in Helsinki, even password-reset emails. It's mainly just a matter of choosing a good time to take the site offline for an hour, transfer the database, and switch over the DNS.

There will still be more to do (e.g. choosing a non-U.S.-based SMTP server and DNS registrar), but it's a huge step.

The U.S. economy remains important globally, but it's not the economy like it was in the post-war years. The administration will find that they can no longer apply they same level of global economic pressure to force concessions.

They think they're still holding a straight flush, but it's more like two pairs these days. China and the EU hold comparable hands, economically, and India is about to draw another card …

Tip for Ontarians: If your financial situation permits, when you receive your bribes rebate cheques from the premier and prime minister, donate them directly to the campaign of a more-progressive local candidate.

The Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) in Ottawa takes risks, and as a result, it has more than its share of duds, but the current play Why It's i̶m̶Possible justifies a whole season in itself.

Strong recommendation. Make sure you get out to see it.

Progress: I have a basic version running on the new European server, deployed as Docker containers (to simplify future migrations).

What I want to do this morning: play classical guitar, read mystery novels, and drink tea.

What I'm going to do this morning: continue preparing OurAirports.com to be transplanted from a U.S. hosted server to a European one.

It's been on its current server since 2007, so it's put down deep roots and will take time to move, but it's important to protect my users' privacy and safety.

I should add that Captain Wentworth would also have his half-pay as an inactive naval captain, which would account for an extra couple of hundred pounds or so per year, depending on his position on the naval list (which was based strictly on seniority).

This is only a very loose guideline, because the relative costs of different goods and services have changed a lot in over two centuries. But it's enough to get a sense of the order of magnitude of a character's income or wealth.

To convert wealth to income, multiply by 4%. So Captain Wentworth's £20,000 in prize money in Persuasion would give him a safe income of £800/year (=~ contemporary US$80,000). The small inheritance that Anne brings to the marriage will push them up into the vicinity of £1,000/year, IIRC.

To get a very, very rough idea of the value of money in Jane Austen's novels, just multiply Regency £×100 to hit the ballpark in contemporary US$.

In Northanger Abbey, Catherine's father gives her £10 spending money (=~ $1,000) for six weeks in Bath staying with family friends.

In Pride and Prejudice, Mr Darcy has an income of £10,000 (=~ $1,000,000) per year.

etc.

If you send an angry letter to the White House, 10 Downing, or the Canadian PMO, it will end up in the shredder with hundreds of thousands of others. If you speak up in a small community group, people will hear you.

You're not helpless. Change comes from millions of small local actions, including yours.

For example, you can influence moving your community discussions off Facebook, whether they're neighbourhood "Buy Nothing" groups, announcements for your kid's sports teams, or monthly open-mic music nights.

When people want to participate in something they care about, they shouldn't be forced to use a toxic website as a condition of entry.

No thank you, I don't want to chat with your company's "Virtual assistant." I'd probably get more-useful answers from a Magic 8-ball.

Asking for an acquaintance. What are the most trans-affirming cities to visit in Europe, and what are the cities it's most important to avoid?

I'd guess Berlin, Amsterdam, and the Nordic capitals would be high in the first list, but looking from a place of cis privilege, I don't have any lived experience to back that up.

I might pause reading or listening to the news until Tuesday.

It will be fixating on something fully predictable — a flashy transfer-of-power ritual between two elderly white men in a big, rich, self-obsessed country — and burying the genuinely newsworthy events happening in the rest of the world.

I like #Signal. But I have an elderly relative who connects to the Internet only through an Android tablet, with no SIM card.

How could we avoid excluding her if we switched the extended family group chat over from FB Messenger? Thoughts?
