The last two thirds were better than the beginning in my opinion.

Not bad, recommended if you're into urban horror or RPGs, but many people know the series already.

(Also the Laundry world seems to have slightly different AD&D 1e than we did, or Dereks's group had some house rules. Which wasn't that uncommon with AD&D. :) )

I recently read @cstross 's new short novel 'A Conventional Boy'. It was fine, although maybe not the first book to start the Laundry series with.

There were some things which I didn't care that much for, though booth babes being just that was mostly a glamour. Still the description was a bit jarring. There were some cringey moments, but many of those were because I have played quite a bit of AD&D back in the day (though mostly 2e).

Tuli luettua suomalaista runoutta: Elli Lepän Pilvipuut. Olen pitänyt hänen edellisistä teoksistaan ja osuihan tämäkin aika hyvin. Leppä siis kirjoittaa ehkä scifiksi laskettavia runoja tässä.

Alku kirjasta oli vähän hidasta lukea minulle, mutta toisen runon kohdalta alkoi sujua paremmin. Ehkä oli vähän liikaa typografiakikkailuja minun makuun.

Suosittelen kyllä, ja Lepän edellisiäkin teoksia. Niistä olen pitänyt. En itse ole kauheasti runoja lukenut, mutta näistä pidän.

Tuli taas jatkettua AC:NH:ta, jäi kesken vuosia sitten. Siinä saa valita saaren joko eteläiselle tai pohjoiselle pallonpuoliskolle. Meillä lapsi valitsi etelän, joten nyt on meillä kesä. Samalla kyllä on joulu, ja kamoja, kuten poropuku.

Samalla on kuitenkin kesäpäivänseisaus, joten kaupassa oli myös… juhannussalko, eurooppalaisena kuriositeettina.

Piti sitten ottaa juhla-asu salon viereen ja ottaa juhlakuva päivänseisauksesta.

Mutta olisiko mahdollista nostaa myös Israel-asekaupat esiin? Sieltäkin ostetaan myös uutisissa hehkutettuja asejärjestelmiä, ja erilaiset valtion edustajat käyvät ihailemassa niiden tehoa käytännössä.

Minusta tämä on aika irvokasta ja myös huonoa puolustuspolitiikkaa: miten varmistetaan mm. huolto, jos Israelille tulee pakotteita? Käynnissä on kansanmurha.

So, yeah, my hard drive at work was running out of space. It might be that it is a tad small, but as I dug around, I found this category view on what's using up space.

So now I know that I have about 277 GB of 'System Data'. No idea what's really there, Apple says 'it's all very important, don't even think of deleting any of it'. I kind of would like to wipe the whole system and find a new career.

Computers were a mistake.

I'm now re-reading the Red Mars trilogy. I laughed out loud when in Green Mars I read this: 'That's libertarians for you - anarchists who want police protection from their slaves.'

I think I saw a mention of this here last week, but it was fun reading it in the book.

Yes, maybe 2024 is the year of the Linux desktop.

I just spent a couple of hours with my Kubuntu desktop installation. I rarely use it, but I had things to do with it and decided to upgrade, which is good to do every once in a while.

Well. It seems this is the year of the 80x25 tty desktop. After upgrading the version (which I thought to be 24.04 LTS as that’s what was supposed to be the target) I get… no desktop.

Apparently this installed Wayland.

Se on ollut mulle harrastus, se on antanut aiheen lähteä kotoa ja nähdä muita ihmisiä muualtakin kuin tietokoneen ruuduilta. On voinut myös jutella muustakin ennen ja jälkeen tunnin.

Töissä jo istun koneella etäkokouksissa ihan liikaa, miksi vielä vapaa-ajalla?

Sen lisäksi mulle kielten oppiminen on paljon helpompaa luokassa. Näen muutakin kuin opettajan kalvot, on helpompi kysyä, ja keskustelut ovat kivampia.

En tätä nyt kyllä jaksa. Ehkä pitää käydä vaikka lenkillä sen sijaan.

Tänään harmittaa työväenopisto ja kielikurssit, ja tietty "säästöt".

Viime viikolla siis alkoi japanin kurssi, mulle nyt viides vuosi. Ryhmä on pitkälti ollut sama, ja syksyä 2020 lukuunottamatta hybridiopetuksena. Noin puolet ryhmästä on ollut luokassa, puolet etänä.

Nyt sitten "säästösyistä" kurssi on vain etänä. Ekalla tunnilla olin, mutta en varmaan enempää jaksa. Aihe on kiva, mutta tajusin juuri, että se on ollut mulle enemmän kuin vain se opetus.

I got a strange keyboard problem at work, I wonder if somebody here can help.

I have a Macbook Pro, running quite recent OS X. I run VMWare Fusion on it, and I have a Debian 11 virtual machine.

This week I noticed that the Finnish keyboard dead keys don't work anymore. I use them to type characters like ~, ^ and `. It used to work so that I type the dead key and then space and I get the character.

Now it does not work.

Taas asiat ihmetyttävät.

Tällä kertaa mietin miksi leffalippuja netistä ostettaessa puhelinnumero ja osoite ovat pakollisia tietoja. Lippu tulee sähköpostiin ja raha tulee myyjän tilille kuitenkin.

Käteisellä tai jopa kortilla paikan päältä ei tällaisia kysellä, niin miksi ennakko-ostoossa?

Kind of the only thing that's good about shoes bought in April and which look like this is that I can hope next year there will be nicer colours. This year it was black, blue, brown and some gray.

Also, no difference between 40 € shoes and 100 € shoes that I can tell. Both fall apart in one summer.

Vähän tulee tyhmä olo kun sitten skidinkin pitäisi ymmärtää se juuri siinä yläkoulussa. Ei ole aina helppoa se.

En mä helppoa ratkaisua tiedä. Toisaalta helppo alanvaihto opiskellessa ja töissä olisi varmaan hyvästä, ei tarttisi 16- tai 19-vuotiaana tehdä isoja päätöksiä loppuelämästä. Siitä toki koitetaan nyt kovasti päästä eroon.

Tänään harmittaa: koulujen arvosanat.

Lähinnä nyt kun pitäisi lasta motivoida lähtemään kouluun. Alakoulussa arvosanat on silleen kivoja, kun näkee vähän mihin ollaan menossa ja mitä on opittu, mutta sitten yläkoulussa on samaa, mutta sitten niillä onkin ysin lopussa aivan kauhean iso merkitys.

Silleen iso osa peruskoulusta menee "no arvosanoilla ei ole niin kauheasti väliä, näet mihin panostaa", mutta sitten yhtäkkiä ne onkin "no näillä onkin seuraavien vuosien kannalta iso merkitys."
