You know how doctors struggle to take medical dramas seriously, because they know most of the medical dialogue is nonsense? And lawyers struggle with legal dramas because they know that's not how the law actually works? And don't get me started on 'hackers' in films.

Sadly, that's been my experience with LLMs. They're great until they start talking about something I know the answer to, then they look like they're bluffing their way through a job interview with smart-sounding technobabble. 😒

How do you turn a Raspberry Pi project into production hardware? Can code be as expressive as music? What makes the perfect live-coding environment (and why is it Lisp)?

This week we search for the perfect feedback loop for the live-coding experimenter:

We're more than just coders - we're system builders. And to be good at building systems means getting good at a lot more than just code...

This week I'm joined by the author of Learning Systems Thinking to consider the wider picture around making software that really works.

My Happy News of the Day is that I've been asked to give a Keynote talk at CodeRemix in Miami in May: https://coderemix.ai/

It's a conference all about how we can improve code quality with better tools and techniques - something that's only going to get more important in the age of AI. 😅

Developer Voices is back for 2025 with a look at Fyrox, a huge project to build an entire game engine in #Rust. In figuring out what makes it tick, we look at everything from rendering to hot-reloading of Rust code and runtime introspection macros...

I really enjoyed this little web/pico-8 game by @aymeri:

Looks like it's one entry in an attempt to write and ship a minigame a month for 100 months! Wow. 😎

Sam Aaron might have the most interesting programming career I know of: he's an international live-coding DJ, travelling the world making music with little more than a programming language he designed. 😎

This week he joins me to explain it all - how he got started, how he designed his ideal language for musical expression, and how making software simple enough for a child to use can also empower the experts...

What’s happening with Elm-lang? That had to be the first question I asked #Elm's creator, Evan Czaplicki, and the answer is tied up in something fundamental: what’s happening with Open Source funding? Can OSS successfully exist when companies want everything they can get for free, forever? 😰

What have we learned from more than a decade of deploying microservices? And are we any better at breaking large systems down into the optimum slices?

Ian Cooper and James Lewis join me to thrash it out, in this live episode recorded at GOTO Copenhagen…

AnnoucementWare (n): Software that only exists long enough to be announced at the company's annual conference.

Like VapourWare, but focussed on a single large PR splash.

For reasons we'll go into, it's hard to do actors in a memory-safe way, at C-like levels of performance. Ponylang's solution to that is fascinating - a technique called Reference Capabilities...

This week we try to steal some software architecture ideas from the gaming world, and then double-down by getting some project-management ideas too. 😎

Alice Cecile joins me to discuss #Bevy, the #Rust game engine with an ECS core and a lot of ground to cover:

Earlier in the week I was running a D&D game, and I accidentally named two different random NPCs 'Beryl'. The players called me on it, so I had to invent an elaborate reason why there were so many women named Beryl in the Kingdom.

Since then I've been obsessing over building a whole story around The League Of Beryls, which I see as a clandestine network of late-middle-aged, upper-middle-class assassins. Like the Rotary Club, but with daggers...

What does it take to write a programming language? In Rust? For as unique a domain as Computer Aided Design? Joining me this week is Adam Chalmers, who’s got some people’s dream job: he’s being paid to do it. 😁
