I just played/read "A Circle of Charity" and am disturbed in a very good way. Genius storytelling, made very intense by the old 1990's computer interface and sound and the eary feeling how much is missing and could not be recovered.

You might want to read the trigger warnings before you play it.

If the makers are on the #Fediverse let me know so I can give them a shoutout.

A story told by how much is not told, I'd say sums it up best.

Okay, so, instead of a marketing post...

How it started / how it is going

This is part of the original conversation I had with a friend via DM laying out the idea of an original Space Opera to her July 2020, including this description of the central character arc. Back then, neither ship nor captain had a name.

Beside it the finished novel "Herald Petrel", showing said Captain Harold Galahad. (Beside a can of Irn Bru of course, don't know why you are surprised? πŸ˜†)

It was a great find today.

The book is available here:

In an interesting twist of events I broke my reciprocating saw, dismantled it, found out how it worked, cleaned it, put it together again (surprisingly without brute force and nearly no parts left behind), and afterwards it did work again.

I assure you nobody can be more surprised about that but me.

What would your MC’s go-to song at a party be? Would they be dancing?

I mean, Siff's theme song is Fight Song in the version of the U.S. Navy so probably it is that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1C767TzEEag

She wouldn't dance. Real fighters don't dance. They compete. They fight. They don't dance. They. Do. Not. Dance.

They. Do. Not. Dance!

I am soooo looking forward to let her loosen up...

[#]WordWeavers 23: In their world, is your MC more traditional or more interested in change?

Siff is done with traditions. The few that can be called that on her home planet all are deeply rooted in the constant civil war. She doesn't believe in the Mother Goddess or any goddess or god at all so the few religious festivities that don't have to do with fighting are just hollow and meaningless to her.

But she is also not really interested in change. When you were born on Phtat'Grthak you learn that you have to compete, fight, kill in order to stay alive and that this is an universal truth that will never change and can't be changed.

So, she is indifferent to both sides.

[#]WordWeavers 1 Does the thought of dying scare your characters?

Each character deals differently with it. Siff is rather cold-blooded about it. Death is the end and it comes sooner or later. That's that.

Galahad believes in the afterlife and that he will be reunited with his wife Aretha. Death is not scary, rather welcome for him.

Raffi doesn't want to think about dying. It was terrible enough when her grandfather died. She is determined to enjoy life to the fullest as long as it lasts but she hates thinking that Mister Galahad will die before her.

Sinclair secretly fears he will die before having achieved greatness and being acknowledged for the righteous path he took.

I could go on and on and on, but I don't want to bore you.

I did it. It felt like what I needed to do today. After careful consideration I kept my account on twitter (I will call it that as long as its owner misgenders his daughter) so nobody can grab the handle and pretend to be me, just locked it and unfollowed everyone, even if it was hard and brought back a lot of memories, many good, some not so good.

I left the message

"Who I am is where I stand.

Where I stand, is where I fall."

Twelfth Doctor

Supporting democracy, LGBTIAQ+ rights and human decency. Not supporting fascists. I keep the account but lock it and unfollow everyone.

Where There's Tears There's Hope

Stay safe, everybody!

And I really wanted to have the message "not a follower" on there even if it meant two clicks for every one of the 872 accounts.

Also me: Drinks beer and dances uncoordinated to Latvian folk in the living room like the normal, responsible, adult person I am.

Fiddling with getting @admin working again. If you followed before you might have to unfollow and follow again. I wish I had Handy O'Brian with me. Alas, I haven't...

[#]WordWeavers 19 How honest is your MC when honesty will get them into trouble?

Not at all. As someone brought up on a planet devastated by constant civil war, Siff Braghor will be a tactical liar when the situation calls for it.

She is, however, done with lying for her own sake. She is lying to protect the people she cares about. When it comes to what she thinks of a person, she will speak her mind, not minding personal consequences.

And then, there is the private, emotional side of Siff, but she keeps it so well guarded it seems impossible to catch a glimpse. How honest is she when it comes to what she truly feels? Well, that's one thing that might play a role in the second season...

[#]PennedPossibilities 561 β€” Give us your thoughts on the genre of your WIP. Do you love it, is there not enough stories written within it, are you an avid reader of the genre, etc.?

[#]ScienceFiction is such a mixed bunch...there is so much crap and so many books and series I absolutely adore. My dad was an avid reader of #SciFi, so I grew up with the worlds of Perry Rhodan and E.E.Smith but also with the more intellectual concepts of Lem or Asimov.

For me, the ensemble cast SciFi like Star Trek always resonated more than the ones where one single hero saves the day. Sometimes even Star Trek fell for this, often it was down to the captain to come up with the right solution.

There are never enough stories in a genre, I think. I am writing a universe that I missed: not a stellar exploration ship or some military ship but a meager cargo ship with a crew that is tackling the odds together, in which there are a bunch of heroes, some very unlikey ones among them, in a world where a lot of things went very wrong but also, on an individual level, things go occasionally right.

Okay, I said there is this #bookreview that is so wholesome it feels like a sacrilege to use it for marketing. But @KurtHohmann who wrote it told me to be as profane as I like if it just encourages me to write a sequel. So, there. This is what he said about #HeraldPetrel and here is the link to all the bookstores that hold it: https://books2read.com/HeraldPetrel

[#]PennedPossibilities 560 β€” Your MC has exactly two hours to do something with a small amount of currency in their world. How are they spending the time and money?

Siff would look for a place where you can compete with somebody for a small amount and get ten times the money back if you win. The discipline wouldn't matter, boxing, sword fighting, martial arts, darts... Also, the money wouldn't matter. It is just for the fun of competing - and of course winning!

Galahad wouldn't know what to do and ask Raffi who probably would suggest getting some snacks and see a movie or buy a game.

I am looking for recommendations of which #pixelfed server to join. I am a writer so I guess most I will be doing is lurking, see at what other writers and reviewers share and liking cat pictures. I do have cat pictures of my own which I might share as well... And probably gush about my characters because: How can I not?

I have now one review that is so wonderful it feels like a sacrileg to use it for marketing and one review that is so spoilery I can't use it for marketing.😬

[#]WordWeavers 17 Do you prefer long or short works?

For reading? I have the attention span of a squirrel with focus issues so, the shorter, the more likely I keep at it. Depends on the storyteller, though, and also what phase I am in.

For writing? I don't like stories to end. I like to write them on and on and on. So, yeah, if I start writing it tends to become epic, although I try that every chapter is a story in itself.

Ha, I unearthed a 100 word story I did for the prompt "simplicity", so, I guess that qualifies for today's #WordWeavers as well:

The captain wielded his rapier. β€œIt’s your cargo or your life!”

β€œBe my guest.” I made an inviting gesture.

Ten sinister looking pirates entered my ship. I leaned against the mast and waited for them to re-appear from the lower decks.

β€œWhat kind of devilry is that?” the captain shouted. β€œThere isn’t even a rat on this godforsaken barge. What are you transporting?”

I smiled. β€œThe greatest treasure in the world.”

β€œWhat? We didn’t find anything.”

β€œExactly.”

β€œAre you trying to fool us? If there isn’t one damn thing on board – what should be that treasure, then?”

β€œSimplicity,” I replied.

[#]WordWeavers 16: How long is your shortest work?

There are many very short prompts I answered but they are lost in the stream of social media or forums and that's okay.

The shortest I can show is 600 words of #DoctorWho #fanfic that also explains a bit about "The Strange Seawolf"

https://archiveofourown.org/works/26321551

In many regards I am in a far better place than I was back then. in others I am absolutely not. But I learned to write non-fiction again although it doesn't bring the same joy anymore.

I think it still rings true, espectially the last sentence.
