Ok so I try logging into RedBook, and after a few warnings about not doing any crime or otherwise harshing the vibe, I fill out the interest questionnaire. I am then politely shown to the cat video firehose.
After a few minutes, I decided to put some basic machine translated simplified Chinese in the bio, dutifully post a couple stills of my own cat, and was rewarded within two minutes with nice comments in Chinese. Bots or not, as a cat video fancier, I found it a wonderful experience, very pleasant, and looks hella addictive.
Later I log back into my local fedi instance, and see rando dude doing a “you need alt text” scold. The target of said scold was already dutifully and usefully alt texted. The issuer of said scold, upon questioning, stated they had misunderstood their client config and the alt text existed. Said issuer appears to have NO OTHER POSTS other than this interaction.
I mean… the part where RedBook’s ToS says not to reverse engineer them or use unapproved apps, or to insult the “national feelings” (Apple translate’s wording). The part where they put the country of my last login IP address ON MY PROFILE PAGE is an interesting choice (no, not the IP itself), but I can see some fraud arguments.
I just want fedi to be… happier. Less grumpy. Maybe I just need to change my feed.
