The one thing I want Microsoft to actually improve using "AI" or whatever is the slide designer feature in powerpoint and it's still hilariously awful :(
Sure, 9 point font or text running off the screen or white text on light gray background is JUST FINE thanks

I have been told the party isn't until Tuesday, as always, I'm early to the party.
But I'm leaving this up, I'll post again on Tuesday. I hope others will celebrate here!
Ain't no party like a newspaper party

For #ChronAmParty this year, we're going old school and posting to our neglected blog, as we left Twitter and have yet to figure out where else we'll be posting.
Laura Weakly shares some RetroFuturism found in historic Nebraska newspapers: https://cdrhdev.unl.edu/log/2025/retrofuturism-chronamparty-science-fiction-in-nebraskas-historic-newspapers/

Last year at the annual Whitman Archive lunch I won the coveted Whitman trophy for the first time and it has sat on my desk all year. Today it (probably) goes to a new home.
This was full of water when they first made it. #whitman

For #DayofDH2024 I am working on the server migration that just. won't. end.
Boring work, but needs to be done.

I think this is a GREAT direction overall, enabled by tools that exist now that didn't exist before. Lots of people are working in this area, and the work is really exciting.

Really rethinking what our job is as a DH center lately. We have been focused on frontend interfaces for data for a while - and while that's still obviously a portion of what we do, a bigger portion of what I think about now is data collection.
How to design relational data gathering when the schema is unknown/needs to grow with the data. How to make annotations easier and quicker to add. How to clean data, how to categorize, which metadata schemas to use and how to extend when there's not one to adapt. How to store that relational data in a way that others can use. How to train students in all of the above in a way that balances staff time and student attention.

We're working on a disaster pan, and I'm wondering how this is handled in other work places.
If there is a disaster, say a tornado, there are designated people that are supposed to check on their group and text the building manager that everyone is accounted for. The problem is, if there's nasty weather forecast, people will likely stay home, and it seems unfair to force people to come in in nasty weather just so they can give the "all clear".
I suspect other workplaces just kinda let people get to a safe space on their own, but I am curious: does your workplace have a process for identifying employees who have not made it to a safe spot in an emergency?

In my library we had a discussion of AI earlier, and a coworker that has done cool things with it talked about how he thinks of it like using the dryer: bad for the environment, and he thinks of that every time he dries his clothes, but he still uses the dryer. He feels he can't be excited and share the cool things because of environmental concerns.
I personally have avoided using any of the very large (Open AI, Claude, etc) LLM stuff because I feel guilty based on all the dire warnings I have heard about how bad it is for the environment.
I am curious how others are justifying their use of these tools to themselves given the publicized environmental costs, in part because I feel like I have to start experimenting with them if only to clearly state what they are NOT useful for. Feel free to respond privately!
(I had a hard time phrasing this, please know I am not trying to judge anyone's use of AI any more than I would judge people driving to work)

Is anyone here using Mukurtu? Are there any contingency plans for what happens when Drupal 7 reaches end of life? The Mukurtu page still says it will be released "in 2024." (https://mukurtu.org/mukurtu-4/) The repo is being actively developed, but says it should only be used for testing right now https://github.com/MukurtuCMS/Mukurtu-CMS. It's also being built on Drupal 9, which has also stopped receiving security updates.
