The #typography for the #JohnWaters Collection on Criterion Channel brings together Flyer, Red Top, and a whole bunch of styles from House Industries’ Sign Painter series. These choices evoke lettering as seen in the US in the mid-20th century, the era in which films like Hairspray, Female Trouble and Cry-Baby are set.

On Sunday, we added a series with not-so-common typefaces that have direct or indirect roots in French #ArtNouveau.

It includes a poster designed by Milton Glaser using Métropolitaines (Fonderie S. Berthier & Durey, 1905) – which is based on the lettering created for the entrances to the Paris Métro – and the first in-use examples for Filmotype Vassar & Vanderbilt, Letraset Gary, and PLINC Battleship. The latter is a revival of Modern Style (Peignot & Fils, c.1897).

Over the weekend, we published a big batch of album art, ranging from easy listening and comedy to death metal, and dating from the late sixties to 2024.

One focus was on #typefaces by Charles Papirtis – the geometric Pink Mouse and his Bodoni Shaded – and other display designs by PLINC, like S.E. Norton’s spooky Mr. Bones, Dave Davison’s old-timey Carousel, and the graphic Ginger Snap and Riverside Drive by Craig Mierop and Peter Max.

Often Georgia is not in the limelight, but quietly does the heavy lifting as a text font optimized for the screen. Here’s one Use where it takes center stage, for the cover of an album by indie rock band Taxes, designed by @annie: https://fontsinuse.com/uses/16997/taxes-it-never-ends-and-kali-album-art

Minneapolis-based Studio MPLS designed a coffee tin that convincingly establishes a vintage c.1940s look.

The #FontsInUse are @marksimonson’s Coquette, a hybrid between an upright “French” script and early geometric sans serifs, and two quirky sans serifs by Jeff Levine: Arrevederci and Main Feature are based on 1950s sheet music lettering and plastic letters found on theater marquees, respectively. https://fontsinuse.com/uses/65505/roastar-sun-ground-coffee-tins

Happy holidays! 🦌🔔🎄

Here’s @fhardwig examining the movie titles of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The 1964 #Christmas TV special opens with letterforms that can be traced back to the Lettera alphabet book series, Ben Shahn lettering, and Romanesque capitals.

Of course, this list is determined by what folks contribute to the site, and it is heavily weighted by current fashions. Notable labels not listed:

– metal foundries now unclaimed or owned by other companies

– PLINC (now owned by House Industries)

– Emigre (and others popular in 1990s to early 2000s which are not yet well represented on the site)

– all the foundries whose top fonts are now owned by Monotype (Colophon, Font Bureau, ITC, Linotype, Sharp…)
