I am constantly amazed how many of the Americans I follow on various social media still seem to work on the assumption that this is a four-year thing that they just somehow have to get through. Where do they get the confidence that there will be another free election?

One of the thought experiments Germans my age were asked to do in history class back in the 80s was, “What would you have done in 1933?”

One can only hope that the Conservatives have dug their own grave with this with regard to the upcoming election. But given the level of xenophobia in Germany right now, I fear they won’t be punished in the way they deserve. This is the scariest political situation in Germany that I have ever experienced.

Anyone else out there, who finds the mere idea of being forced by news programmes to listen to Trump difficult? By this point, I feel the Guardian would likely increase its readership, if it offered a “Trump-free-by-default” version.

Also, the one use of AI I can currently see working for me is one that mutes radio and TV channels the moment he or one of his goons comes on. Torn between the knowing what a privilege that would be and full-on “self-care” mode.

I have seen Maggie Smith live on stage twice while I lived in London. Once in Alan Benett’s “Lady in the Van” and once with Judy Dench in the David Hare play “The Breath of Life”. Both were fantastic. And it just occurred to me that both of those were small quiet productions which rested on only three/two actors because in both cases, the actors in question, but particularly Maggie Smith, were well capable of filling a stage with their presence. I feel quite bereft.
