Arturo Toscanini conducting Beethoven's Missa Solemnis at the Queen's Hall in London in May 1939, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Choral Society. The soloists are Zinka Milanov, Kerstin Thorborg, Kolomon von Pataky, and Nicola Mosconi.

Francis Poulenc was born #OTD in 1899. So here's the NBC Opera Theatre production of Carmelites, made for American TV in 1957, and sung in English.

Put up with a bit of wow and flutter for the sake of Elaine Malbin as Blanche, Leontyne Price as Madame Lidoine and the great Patricia Neway as Mme de Croissy.

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was born #OTD in 1710. He was a great composer, and the history of music might have been very different had he not died so tragically young.

Evelyn Lear and Christa Ludwig sing his Stabat Mater with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and Lorin Maazel.

Maurice Ravel died #OTD in 1937.

So here is La Valse, one of his greatest scores, originally commissioned as a ballet, and danced by the Royal Ballet in Frederick Ashton's choreography, in 1963.

Alban Berg's Wozzeck was first performed in Berlin #OTD in 1925.

The premiere was conducted by Erich Kleiber, who also conducts this performance from Covent Garden in 1953, with Jess Walters as Wozzeck and Marea Wolkowsky as Marie.

Wilhelm Furtwängler died #OTD in 1954.

So many extraordinary performances, but this is Weber's Der Freischütz from Salzburg in July the same year, with Elisabeth Grümmer, Rita Streich, Hans Hopf and Kurt Böhme.

Bartók's The Miraculous Mandarin was first performed in Cologne #OTD in 1926.

Filmed in Strasbourg, this is a 2004 production by the Ballet de l'Opéra du Rhin, choreographed by Lucinda Childs, and conducted by Daniel Kawka.
