This is #Corporatism writ large. Unwanted detractors are kept out of the decision making process. Crickey owner, a shareholder, was barred from the shareholders meeting while other sympathetic journos (non-shareholders) were invited in. This is the dark side of Australia and an indication of the power these corporations exert on the markets. Deregulated markets and neolberalism is what got us here. It's up to us to roll this back with better regulations via the ballot box on #May25

"The remarkable thing is that Albanese and Dutton are not even outliers compared to their peers: nearly 40% of MPs or their families own three or more properties and 20% own four or more. And they are nowhere near the wealthiest landowners. That honour is shared between Labor MP Andrew Charlton and independent Allegra Spender, both of whom have portfolios valued at well over $40 million."

Now you all know why neither major party in Federal politics will do what is really needed to address the #housingcrisis in Australia.

I’m just going to keep tabs with what is happening in the ‘ #fascist #putsch currently underway in the #USA but refrain from flooding my toots with anger and dismay. It’s doing my head in.
I’d be better served by doing what I can to minimise the damage that the #TrumpTsunami will have on my community. Now is not the time to withdraw. Now is the time to jump in with both feet and fight to preserve our democratic way of life. I will do what I can by recommitting to political activism inside the #Labor Party.
[#]Elections25 #PoliticalActivism
Whomever you are likely to vote for in #May25 , I beg you to stop, think, compare, discuss, get informed and reflect before casting a vote. Don’t let Australia get to the edge of #Trumpism , if it does, WE’LL ALL FALL, as they are all falling in the US, into the abyss.

Wouldn’t it be great if the next federal elections was fought on things that mattered most, like democracy building.
“To renew its democracy, Australia must make its system of government more representative, accountable and responsive to the needs of citizens. There is a need for a stronger focus on integrity in politics, ensuring governments act transparently, empathetically and in ways that deliver tangible outcomes for the public. Public dissatisfaction with political corruption, inefficiency and a lack of responsiveness must be addressed to restore trust in political institutions.
While Australia continues to be a leading democracy, it faces pressing challenges that could undermine the sustainability of its democratic institutions if not addressed. The audit calls for a period of democratic reinvention, with an emphasis on improving governance to better serve citizens and maintain public trust in democracy.”

This is so fucking wrong it makes my blood boil, I swear.
“New South Wales Premier Chris Minns asked residents to avoid running large appliances, like dishwashers and washing machines, for a few hours to ease pressure on the grid. During that incident the wholesale power spot price hit the market cap of $17,500 (the average for the quarter was $88).” (Source: ABC News)
If this is not a runaway ‘market’ grifting, I don’t know what is. High demand for #electricity which stresses the #grid Does Not mean extra very costly electricity is imported from Tonbouktou !
[#]Energy demand is a societal fact which support the basic human right to safe shelter (the means to regulate temperature inside a dwelling), yet when the grid can’t meet demand, the response is to jack the price up to see how far they can push the grift. What a fucked up market.
Time to #nationalise the energy market and stop this #profiteering. #ThisIsNotCapitalism it is #extortionism #aupol
I am so mad right now.

Hoping we're not flogging a dead horse here because we all deserve a break now. Especially those doing it tough.
"The Reserve Bank is now out of excuses to not cut interest rates, write Bernard Keane and Glenn Dyer. A failure to do so in February will stoke the kind of populist resentment that has led to Donald Trump trying to wreck central bank independence in the US, where uncertainty around the new administration has seen the Federal Reserve pause interest rate cuts. When Dutton errs, he hides. That's the conclusion Bernard Keane comes to in this article (Criceky News) while also pointing out:
"Mind you, if it’s waste and inefficiency that Dutton is worried about, Paul Keating left spending at 25.6% of GDP. The government Dutton was a senior member of left spending in 2021-22 at 26.4% of GDP, (helped in part by its reckless and incompetent defence expenditure under Dutton) which helped drive inflation up to 7%, and we’ve been wearing the consequences ever since."

Telling words from #GraceTame:
“The prime minister doesn’t need my advice, and I’m sure he isn’t interested in it either. I don’t envy him or his job. I can only imagine it’s a poison chalice, and I’ve no desire to hold another one of those. I just hope he remembers that while pressure and privilege may come from the plutocracy, in this country (for now at least), his power still comes from the people.”

My fave lines from the article:
“Never again should we swallow the lie that only the Reserve Bank can tackle inflation. We also should never again listen to those economists who seem to desire other people (it is never themselves) to be unemployed in order to apparently cause inflation to fall.”
It’s time mainstream economist ditched the neoliberal lies.

Greg Jericho explains: the #RBA now has no excuse, it must lower the #CashRate at its next meeting.
“Not only are the annual inflation figures showing prices are rising at the pace the RBA aims for – within 2% and 3% – but the December quarter itself had prices growing slower than that associated with 2% annual inflation.”

I've seen various headlines about an unspecified #NDIS disaster in the making, no doubt all part of a #CorporateNews disinformation campaign ahead of #Election25. A #Crickey post clarifies:
"The beat-up over the NDIS is skewed by a worldview that sees supporting the most vulnerable in our community as an unaffordable cost, while tactically ignoring the benefits to recipients and our society of that care.
We could equally ask whether Australia can “afford” to give wealthy superannuants a huge tax break on their retirement savings. The Commonwealth actually “spends” more (by forgoing taxation) on superannuation tax concessions than on the NDIS, the lion’s share of which goes to the wealthy."

"Negative triangularity #plasma shapes feature enhanced performance as they suppress instabilities that expel particles and energy from the plasma, preventing severe damage to the #tokamak wall.
Besides offering high #fusion performance, negative triangularity also features attractive power handling solutions, given that it covers a larger divertor area for distributing the heat exhaust. This also facilitates the #engineering design for future compact fusion power plants."

"Peter Dutton leads a pack of duds, and his policies — where he has them — are an embarrassing confection of innumeracy and MAGA Down Under cut-and-pastes. Labor should be setting itself up for an extended period in government. Instead, Anthony Albanese is quietly leading it to defeat."
In this column, Bernard Keane (Crickey) has either prepared the Party faithful for an inevitable defeat at #Election25, or (in the event that #AlboPM 's office ever read his columns) warning the Labor Leader to up his game to ensure a return to office. Either way, what he writes kind of hits the nail on the head - though it may not be the best hammer. The 'small target' strategy adopted by Labor which won them government is not going to do it for them this time around, THAT is a GIVEN.
Concluding with 3 factoids that the electorate has been repeating for the last two years: "Voters aren’t interested in the composition of the workforce, or what proportion of the economy manufacturing makes up. They want to know (1) when energy and grocery prices are going to fall, (2) when the corporations that have gouged them and ripped them off will get their comeuppance, and (3) when the economy will start delivering for them rather than for investors, executives and the rich."
Of Albo's managerial style of leadership Keane remarks that "No-one else is playing by the rules."

“Even apart from the fact that it marks an invasion, the foundation of a colony that later became one of Australia’s states isn’t much of a basis for a national day.” (John Quiggen)

Though I’ve ‘served’ (hence sworn), I have never celebrated Australia day, even before Howard fixed it to Jan 26th. I will never celebrate it unless First Nations people and Torres Straight Islanders are recognised in our Constitution and afforded the care and attention afforded to all other Australians without reserve (when even then it will not make good on what was and is being done to them since Cook).

This, from a Joe Rogan podcast listener, and presumably a representative sample of Rogan’s audience:
“For a lot of people, Rogan was a safe haven where you can go and talk about man stuff,” Alexander says. “UFC, hunting, eating fucking meat, fast cars, slightly offensive comedy, all that stuff. I feel like the normal guy over the past seven to eight years has been made to feel like a horrible person – almost like it’s been made to feel like it is bad to feel normal”.
Statements like those above betray an ignorant binary gender belief system and a lack of clear thinking. Nothing the respondent lists as ‘man stuff’ (whatever the fuck that might actually be) is the preserve of male gendered individuals. Influencers such as #JoeRogan are nothing but predators on the weak minded predominently males to gain fame and extract wealth. IMHO
Our #education systems are failing us.

I couldn’t say it better than Paul Daley:
“The modern Australian state began as a colonial outpost built on a genocidal landgrab. It remains at once weirdly lackadaisical and resentful (in a kind of sun-kissed “if it ain’t broke …” defensive way) about proposed constitutional change to usher in either a republic or, first things first, perhaps, to acknowledge 60,000-plus years of Indigenous civilisation in the founding document of the settler state.
We cling, limpet-like, to the archaic vestiges of a distant dysfunctional hereditary monarchy – emotionally and psychologically lashed to that small island in Europe. Today is a lot about that. But we are also geopolitically and militarily hocked to Washington no matter what would-be dictator runs the place.”
