@BrodieOnLinux apologies for this unsolicited rant, I've been using Linux since the 90s and sometimes this stuff is just a pain - but maybe we all use this stuff because we are masochists.

@BrodieOnLinux AND (for what feels like two decades) Firefox.

In Windows programs, I can not only browse remote file shares in file browsers, but the file browser widget is so over the top - that I can paste a URL into any old file browser and get that downloaded and opened (yes, in notepad).

@BrodieOnLinux oh man AND as I do this, I remember that I can't browse windows file shares in the file dialogue that comes up when I hit extract.

Before MS changed from SMB1 to SMB2/3 you automatically get lists of Samba shares in Gtk dialogues and nautilus.

This is only just coming back with WSDD on Linux, but loads of dialogues only browse local files, including file-roller...

@BrodieOnLinux remember the first 15 years or so of file-roller (I might be exaggerating - but don't think so) where you could drag files from the archive into nautilus ?

I love newer Gtk and Wayland, but every time I have to decompress things from an archive I curse this, for what 5 years, maybe the last 8?

When will this come back ?

The legs on these clothes racks break in the same place every time.

Someone could make money selling a little bit of pipe with a cut out to brace it.

Seems kind of silly that us devs develop all our little services using different port numbers. Would be much nicer to have localhost subdomains for user and then service. someproject_api.64kb.localhost someproject_frontend.64kb.localhost sort of thing. Just put my user in the DNS group and give me permissions to change the whole thing or maybe I just get part of the namespace.

Want to like Arcane, tried jumping in where I gave up in s1e8, but.. nope..

Somehow it fits its imagine dragons soundtrack, which Gismodo reviewed as "their music is perfectly fine and good to have on as background noise."

When something has all the ingredients of a thing you would normally like it's somehow more frustrating, but of course it's not like Im owed anything, and can just do or watch something else

Mobile apps are 99% garbage, and that 99% is the ad supported model.

No, I won't install something with ad tech where possible, but it's really difficult to find any that isn't full of this crap.

@TodePond (also just very dumb because of lack of sleep :) )

I'm not quite sure what a lack of sleep optimised environment would be, though certain kinds of programming lend themselves to it more than others.

@TodePond is arroost usable from a touchscreen? I couldn't work out if it was only because I was being dumb when I tried poking it from my phone or if it was that and that it wants a mouse.

If we are going to have remix machines / LLMs it only works if everything going in is some known license: GPL trained LLM generates GPL code for instance.

There should be apis to group a set of of files or streams from a process and get their output in order it's output (and ideally with timestamps).

This is most obviously a pain when you run some sub process and want to output stdout and stderr in the order it arrives.

It would also make things like logging other streams easier.

Wonder if the reason I can't watch algo-rave is some compartmentalisation in my head graphics == fun, any other code == work. Having said that, I can watch shader competitions.. definitely a me problem, and arbitrary - I'm glad people do it though.

Wish someone would make shazam but just to identify "what the shit is making that alert sound?."

I can't keep track of the different noises :(
