I realize it’ll never be the workhorse I need until they’re done, but earlier last year I felt like if I didn’t release the uprights, I would sit on the project forever. Meanwhile, I’ve forced myself to play with weight for emphasis more than I typically would.

Not a resolution as such, but a plea to the universe for the time and the motivation to get these Buckram italic styles finished this year. https://bijoutype.com/typefaces/buckram

It is both a blessing and a curse that I will mid-flight en route to DiaTipo in Brazil when the @letterformarchive book sale starts this weekend.

For the Monday crowd who may have missed my soft launch over the weekend:

At last, thanks to the wonderful work of http://hankmakes.com (for the design) and http://arenatheagency.com (for the build and overall site management), I am delighted to announce the arrival of a proper Bijou Type site where you can inspect and license the Bijou families, as well as some other type projects I have completed over the years. Please drop in and check out http://bijoutype.com

Many, many thanks to my pal Hank (http://hankmakes.com) for the design, my pal Lucas (http://arenatheagency.com) for the build and management, my pal Guido (https://tipografia.com.ar/) for developing the platform it’s built on, and everyone who has waited patiently for this to happen.

I was in a Lyft tonight, and the driver was chatting with me about what I do, and not only was he not confused by “type design”, but it turns out he’s an Iranian refugee with a software background who has been teaching himself font engineering so he can make open source Farsi fonts. Coincidentally, he asked where he could find my stuff mere moments after I got the message that the brand spankin’ new Bijou Type site was finally ready! http://bijoutype.com

One of the styles of my Ringold family popped up in the stage graphics for Chappell Roan’s tour this year, which made me very giddy https://typenetwork.com/articles/ringold-sans-chappell-roan

It’s especially heart-breaking to hear about the passing of Hanif Kureshi just I was getting ready to reach out and catch up with him during a long-overdue return to Delhi next month. He was so cool, so eager to share the work of others — like this banner he commissioned from Painter Shabbu on my behalf. https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/art-and-culture/art-to-the-streets-artist-hanif-kureshi-passes-away-9583250/

It’s my 18th birthday for the third time! The first time I turned 18 I was just starting art school and meeting at least one person who would turn out to be one of my dearest pals. On my second 18th birthday I was in Lisbon for ATypI, entering into the type world immediately before starting grad school at Reading. I don’t foresee any momentous life changes this time (of course, the day is young), but I can say that things are alright in my world right now, and I’ll take it.
