Yesterday I played Loom and managed to go to the end.

It is a game that made a great impression on me when I played it as a kid. One of the first I could complete all by myself.

Now I understand why: it is quite easy and incredibly short 😅.

Nonetheless it is a wonderful experience. The story is interesting and served by the most beautiful EGA graphics ever. And the music is sumptuous. 35 years ago it was one of the very first game I played after buying a Sound Blaster. I've loved Tchaikovsky ever since.

I wrote an extensive article about the Mac Mini G4 as a retro-gaming machine.

For me it is near perfect as it is able to run almost anything from the late 80s up to early 2000s. And it has a very reduced footprint and can be easily plugged into modern display 🙂

This article also expose some technical aspects such as the way PowerPC Mac OS machines could ran 680x0 software and delves into the history of PowerPC until the G4.

🇬🇧Today I visited the exhibition « Tokyo, birth of a modern city » with dozen of Japanese art prints on display. They depict the Meiji city that replaced the old capital of the Shogunate from the Edo period. Destroyed by an earthquake and the subsequent fire in 1923, the city was rebuilt to become Tokyo as we know it.

We're at that time of the year when I reflect about the retro games I played during the past twelve months.

Those on which I spent a significant number of hours were:

Yesterday I spent some time capturing gameplay footages of various video games running on MacOS 9. This is the first time I manage to capture videos from one of my vintage machines and I am quite pleased by the result ☺️

These videos will illustrate my upcoming article about the Mini G4.

I tried to choose games representative to a long period of time. Unfortunately some of the oldest refused to run as I could not set my display to pure black and white. It seems this mode is not supported by “modern” graphics cards 😅

In order to illustrate my article about the Mac Mini G4, I took some photos of its motherboard.

This thing is really tiny and is an engineering marvel 😊

IFixit has the same kind of photos, but as they were posted some 20 years ago, they are low res. Some new photos had to be uploaded for posterity 😉

Two nights ago went to a concert performed by the former band of my high-shool, gathered again for a one time occasion 🙂

The guys met and formed the band during our high-shool years in the mid-90s and played together as "Nose Bone" until around 2010. It was the first time they performed all together since then.

I crossed a lot of old familiar faces and I felt a bit old myself 😅

Last week-end I visited a modern art museum in Paris: « La Bourse du Commerce ».

While I found the 18th century building gorgeous, modern art is definitely not my thing 😅

I just read an article of the New York Times with this illustration that demonstrates the disruptive emergence of SpaceX.

But I am wondering: why is “Britain” present on this graph? Do they have a “new space” launcher? I am not very versed in the recent developments, but I had the impression that UK was not a thing concerning space launchers sinces decades.

I had this project to install MacOS 9 on a Mac Mini G4.

It is the very last PowerPC Mac that is supported by a community modded edition of "classic" MacOS. And thanks to the excellent 68K emulation, it is able to run most of the pre-OSX Mac software, up to 1984!

It was very modest when it came to the market in 2005, but with its 1.25GHz G4 CPU, it is a war machine compared to even the PowerMacs intended to run MacOS 7 to 9. A true "super-computer" in a very small footprint 😉

Thanks again to everyone who helped me with OS9 🙂

I finally managed to boot into OS/9 (this was my primary intent): I had to try every keyboard in my possession and one of them solved the problems I had before OSX was loaded.

Thanks to @paulrickards and everyone who gave me a hand 🙂

Now I have to try every mouse in my possession as I have no longer any pointer once in OS/9 😅

If you know more about old #macosx and #mac than me, please read.

I have 2 Mac Mini G4 that I cannot boot on the DVD provided with the machines

I can enter multi-boot by pressing ALT after the chime. Then I see my DVD listed as boot device. But I cannot select them as no button of the mouse has any effect. I can move the pointer though. I cannot use the keyboard for anything else than ENTER that will boot the HDD and SPACE that refreshes. So I cannot enter OpenFirmware.

Could it be because I am using USB PC keyboard and mouse?

I will give a try to Proton Drive. I plan to sync' data between three machines running iOS, macOS and Windows.

I am a satisfied customer of their mail solution, and if I can get rid of Dropbox it would be for the best 😃

I'll tell you about my experience in a few weeks 🙂

Today I'd like to use my old 486 PC for something other than playing classical #msdos games.

Any suggestion of what cool stuff I could do online with it?

Netscape Navigator 3 is up and running so I can surf the web using theoldnet.com.

What else? IRC? BBS? For those I lack good addresses.

Please boost so I may have more suggestions 🙂

I just finished Super Mario Galaxy 😊

I played it a bit 15 years ago on my #Wii, but did not have the patience to collect enough stars to challenge Bowser.

This time I played it on my #switch from the “3D All-Stars” compilation. Most of the levels are very clever: I love the gravity on the small planets 🙂. And the graphics still hold very well.

I think it’s my favorite 3D Mario so far 😀

This book, originally printed in 1985, is the ultimate reference concerning this computer as it goes really deep.
