The general population "quando a fogueira lhes queima o cu" turns into an extreme version of "football couch coach", and all they can muster their enourmous brain power to say is how the firefighters are lazy and they could have done it better. Encouraging words don't you think? Yet they can't be bothered to pick up a hose of their own, or fresh leafy branches, or buckets of water. Passersby do their part by blocking the way for their rubbernecking pleasure.

Fires in the north of Portugal flared up in the last few days. While I spent the weekend taking it easy with my dad etc, who works his ass off, my mom was busy helping put out the fires. She's part of the permanent intervention team of the volunteer firefighters, and has been at work since friday early morning (13/09), with less than a night's sleep since then. The last message I got from her was today (16/09) at 3h18 saying she's ok, just tired.
