I’ve been tracking my sleep for the last few weeks: bedtime, exercise regimen, how many times up in the night etc. It’s been an interesting exercise to see if I can correlate bad nights with bladder / legs to anything. My highest revelation is that I’m generally getting around 8 hours. Not unbroken sleep, but way more than I imagined.

The best ski racers got down the Hahnemkamm in Kitzbuhel this weekend in something less than 2 minutes. When I did it, it took me, generously, about 30 minutes. In my defence, my skis spent the whole thing firmly attached to the ground. It’s very steep and scary. They don’t stop for fortifying nips of rum (more fool them!).

This fucking book. Yeah man. Exactly the same level of robust proof. Do go on.

The wind generally blows down the lake and it was so choppy today I could’ve surfed back to shore. Excellent fun. Good sauna today too. A morning well spent.

I still run, albeit less far and lot more slowly and carefully. I row. I swim in a lake (well, at this time of the year, that’s not really swimming as much as a 10 minute dip). I do plenty. Never look backwards and celebrate what you have and not what you’ve lost.

I was idly looking at Strava today (I don’t go there very often, but my activities are loaded on there automatically). Out of curiosity, I checked my annual mileages. I ran my last marathon in 2019 and my #MultipleSclerosis really began to bite in about 2022. My mileage in my marathon years (2016-2019) was around 1,200 miles a year. After that it was around 1,800 miles (no tapers!). In 2023, it plummeted to about 500 miles and was even lower last year. You know what? I honestly don’t care (cont)

Someone stopped me when I was out #running last night.
“You’re so fucking tall”
….um. Thanks for that.
“I know. Or am I normal height and you’re just small?”

@Black_Flag it’s my dad’s birthday in a couple of weeks. Do you have a book recommendation for a decent (accessible) study of the historical evidence for Jesus and the development of the early church? Two can play this game, I think. Plus I’d be interested too.
(I found myself talking to my somewhat disinterested wife about JC as a Cynic yesterday. I think she just about preferred that to me ranting about Trump)

Calm down. Musk is lots of things, but screaming that he’s a Nazi is hysterical. Occam’s Razor suggests that he’s just a fucking awkward dork, which we’ve seen in his dancing and whatnot before. There will be plenty of other shit to get outraged about. You don’t need to go big right now.

(I’m going to stop in a moment, but one more):
“What about the man who was possessed and Jesus sent the demons into the pigs and the pigs ran off a cliff? What’s going on if that was a psychosomatic situation? I think Jesus really did drive out demons, and I think some people do that today”.
Wow. QED, eh? Far-fetched explanations that try and explain away the obvious demon-based solution. No YOU’RE delusional.

“People who deny the existence of the supernatural will find some way, no matter how far-fetched, to explain a situation apart from the demonic. They’ll keep giving medication, keep drugging the person, but he or she doesn’t get better. There are cases that don’t respond to medical or psychiatric treatment”
An actual doctor, ladies and gentlemen. I prescribe demons. Burn her!

“It’s just amazing to me,” Collins replied, “how people will grasp at anything to try and disprove Jesus’ miracles”.
Fuck me. Nothing like healthy scholarly scepticism, eh?

“We don’t see any evidence for that”
It’s hilarious that these people lack the self-awareness to see any irony whatsoever in their use of the word “evidence”.

“On top of that, he brought people back from the dead - and death is not a psychologically induced state! Plus you have all of his nature miracles - the calming of the sea, turning water into wine. They defy naturalistic answers”
My wife is a psychologist, and she is agog that an academic psychologist can even begin to suggest all this based on zero direct contact with the patient.
I respect my dad’s faith, but it troubles me he thinks this is definitive & will cure me of my atheism.

I’m reading that historical Jesus book my dad gave me for Christmas. He’s talking to a psychologist now.
“Many times people who are healed psychologically have their symptoms return a few days later, but we don’t see any evidence of this. And Jesus healed conditions like lifelong blindness and leprosy, for which a psychosomatic explanation isn’t likely.”

“Oh, I’ve made a tactical error and left my gloves at home”, said a runner at #parkrun this morning… who was wearing shorts, a t-shirt and no hat.
Young people, eh? I was wearing shorts, but also three layers (including down), a hat and my mittens.

I can remember listening to Trump’s “American Carnage” speech at his inauguration in 2017. That was some weird shit (as George W. Bush remarked). I might try and avoid it entirely this time. I can’t be angry every moment of the next 4 years. Well, I can, but it isn’t healthy.
