[#]WritersCoffeeClub 1Feb Shameless self-promotion: What writing project are you working on?
2 simultaneously: A 4th annual run of 10 short stories; a 1st novel.
All 10 first drafts are done for the run of stories. 4 2nd drafts are done. I expect 4-6 drafts, with a goal of completion March/April. 9 from the 1st run have been accepted for publication, 6 from the 2nd, 1 from the 3rd.
1st draft of the novel is at 631 pages in standard MS format, stupidly long for a 1st effort. It’s a wild thing.

Good news yesterday: Does It Have Pockets will publish my short story “A Day of Grace.” A forgotten cap, a puzzling sensation on the crown of a head at the start, at the end the differing lessons husband and wife take from a Monterey pine. Out in June. My thanks to editor Camille Griep.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 12: Do characters use words not in the language you write in? Italics for this, or not?
My characters often use languages other than English, because:
Italics depend on my attitude.

How nice. Six cops across the street right now, one with a shotgun, going into our neighbors' yard. "Maybe on the roof," one says. Big city excitement in #SanFrancisco.

My wife and I are on the train back from Sacramento, and, looking at her phone a moment ago she wondered out loud, What’s Pete Buttigieg going to do next? I said, Well Jeff Tumlin is stepping down at Muni.
Suddenly it seemed not an awful idea

The robots choose a red zone with no adjacent sidewalk to pick up and drop off tourists at the south end of the #SanFrancisco ‘s Golden Gate Bridge, on the west side, opposite the east side, where the pedestrian walkway across the bridge is located. In the first photo, the robot stopped in the red zone and waited and made the tourists come to it.
Someone may well get hurt this way by walking unnecessarily in a fairly busy roadway.

He turned 37 yesterday. I told him that’s a prime age. He laughed politely at the Dad joke.

[#]WritersCoffeeClub 30 October: How much worldbuilding do you do before your first draft?
I live in #SanFrancisco. I write fiction set in San Francisco. As an Ironworker, I built some of San Francisco. As a labor representative, I dispatched workers to build more of it and negotiated agreements for the building of much more. That’s my worldbuilding, then. Does it count?

Just learned that the online magazine Roi Fainéant (anglophone, nonroyal, and busy despite the name) has accepted my short story Turnip-Blooded. I’m thrilled. It’s the first of three stories with its protagonist I’ve completed through fourth or fifth draft this year to be accepted. He faces passage from boyhood in a past #SanFrancisco nearly a Pacific Coast extension of the Rust Belt, in a neighborhood of “meager cabinets and freighted men.” I’ll post a link when it’s out. #WritingCommunity

Was bicycling south on Harrison in #SanFrancisco this afternoon and where the street narrows as it reaches 24th I put my left arm out to signal to a car not far behind that I was moving over. At the stoplight I looked back and saw that it was an unoccupied Waymo. Questions: Do the robots recognize hand signals, or did this one slow to avoid me because I was an Unpredictable Moving Object? And if I repeat the gesture vigorously, as I do sometimes to insist on a merge left, will they understand?

Even though the viewpoints are miles apart, the view of #SanFrancisco from Christmas Tree Point at the top of my Lake Merced/Ulloa/Twin Peaks bike ride this morning was remarkably similar to the view from San Bruno Mountain on my ride last Thursday.
