Also "I'll switch to OpenStreetMap" might not be that good a of a solution except that they are slower to update, they tend to follow the official government names at some point...

Weird (+15min ???) timezone changes, border changes, name changes, banned emojis, ... governments and especially proto-dictators sure love fucking with all our reference data.

Created a dataset for anything ? Well I hope you added a way to have country specific overrides because at some point a politician will decide to break it !

Seeing so much bad takes on Google Maps change of the Gulf of Mexico name...

Maps are always localized from a point of view, they never are universal.

Feature names, borders, projection, center, coordinate systems, what should be hidden due to privacy/military constraints, ... all of that need consideration.

Trying to find Taiwan (country) on a map while in china ? Looking at the Ukranian city of Marioupol while in Russia ? or even Glorioso Islands as part of France while in Madagascar ? Nope.

In countries that have theses the easier is to refer to the administrative body that define maps or names, they know what country they recognize, with what border, what local name they give to features, ...

For names and the US it's the U.S. Board on Geographic Names so as long as Trump manages to get it to change the name, it's the new name. At least when seen from inside the US.

Don't like it ?

So due to hachyderm blocking Threads, guess I'll need to move instances at some point :(

I'm clearly not in agreement with their moderation policy.

They cut a few thousands user connections for vague fears of the future... while there was a single user report (ever) against a Threads user, not even about any harmful content if I read well their report

https://community.hachyderm.io/blog/2025/01/09/defederation-from-threads/#what-was-the-data-on-threads-prior-to-defederation

This is essentially pre-crime, even if Threads was a problem (absolutely not the case right now, but Zuck decisions could change that) the Limit federation mode is there for that.

Each #VSCode update changelog is more and more only a #Copilot plugin changelog.

I might need to change text editors for one with less AI crap.

I'm doing a HL2 commentary run and found a bug so if anyone needs it:

During "Follow Freeman" there is a level where you need to disable the shield, it doesn't have any commentary node (commentary_available 0).

What happens is that it disable commentary mode for the next level (that has some)

So after the level transition to the roof level commentary 1 in the console to re-enable them.

Half-Life 2 anniversary update with dev commentary in the game, a new documentary video by #Noclip crew and the 2 episodes integrated in the same game.

Here goes my weekend?

(Also it’s free on steam if acquired in the next two days, but I had the game for 20 years)

Some integrations like @itchio hardcode URLs (So mainly mastodon only) but for theses that call the webfinger endpoint to get the URL they actually support more than even the fediverse as they don't care about the AP endpoint, only the profile-page one and could be used with any website that wants to implement webfinger.

But if your UI is "webfinger acct:" nobody will know what it is :blobfoxlaugh:

At that point Mastodon is the recognized name so except if your audience is OSS developers that's the one you should be using in UX.

But it raises interesting questions of how to specify what your really support in hints/comments.

Fediverse is less recognized but might not be precise enough if you require ActivityPub as it encompass non-ActivityPub services.

Seeing that kind of comments whenenver someone does Mastodon integration of any sort:

"What you're referring to as Mastodon, is in fact, Fediverse/Mastodon, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Fediverse plus Mastodon"

Open source community, as obnoxious as ever 🤦‍♂️

But Meta still fired part of the Threads team, has an excessive moderation problem and is letting the fediverse integration rot...

But i'm sure they are working on important features like ads !

I simply wanted to add texts to my little stream-deck plugin and now i'm fixing bugs in #rust crates...

Didn't expect such a rabit hole, but maybe i'm doing it wrong and imageproc isn't the correct crate for that (And it's missing quite a few features) :blobfoxsad:

One of the thing I still really dislike on mastodon is the defederation.

Each admin having his own little kingdom where he can decide what the peasants can see.

Netsplits were already a problem on IRC. We learnt none of these lessons.
